Brief Background: • The principles of constructivism theory are derived from three main movements that evolved in the early part of the 20th century: Suprematism in Russia, De Stijl (Neo Plasticism) in Holland and the Bauhaus in Germany. • Committed to complete abstraction with a devotion to modernity • Themes are often geometric, experimental and rarely emotional. • Simple, flat, symbolic colors • Photography (rather than drawn illustrations) and photomontage
Vladimir Tatlin (1885-1953) • central to the birth of Russian Constructivism. • He is remembered most for his Monument to the Third International (1919-20). • Initially trained as an icon painter. • His work shows a desire to abolish the traditionally representational function of art and put it to new, more practical uses.
El Lissitzky (1890 – 1941) • Russian born artist, designer, typographer, photographer and architect who designed many exhibitions and propaganda for the Soviet Union in the early 20th century. • Consequently, his designs, whether for graphic productions or buildings, were often unfiltered political messages.
