The Office of Postsecondary ReadinessIntroduction and Context • The mission of the Office of Postsecondary Readiness (OPSR) is to ensure that every student is equipped with the knowledge, skills, and competencies to graduate high school and successfully pursue a rigorous postsecondary pathway that meets their interests and needs. • The addition of CTE to OPSR’s historic multiple pathways portfolio significantly expands capacity for the design of pioneering school and program models, with a focus on postsecondary preparation. • The multiple pathways portfolio is targeted specifically at over-age, under-credited youth. Today, the office’s work has expanded to include postsecondary readiness for all students, including those who may struggle to graduate high school. This expertise has contributed to the development of the CTE Freshman Enrichment Program.

4. CTE Freshman Enrichment:Program Description • In order to help the hardest-to-serve students earn the most difficult type of diploma, the New York City Department of Education is piloting a Freshman Enrichment Program for entering over-age ninth graders. • CTE endorsed diplomas require as many as eight additional credits above standard Regents diplomas. • To make sure that all students have access to an endorsed diploma, this program targets students who enter high school over-age, giving them the opportunity to earn up to four credits before high school classes begin.

5. CTE Freshman Enrichment ProgramGoal: To promote cognitive, social and emotional growth in preparation for a successful high school experience, while enhancing reading, writing, mathematical and information technology skills, through a guided exploration of self in relation to career planning.

CTE Freshman Enrichment ProgramMajor Components • The fundamental resource for students and teachers in this exploration will be the NYSED CareerZone.org , which provides on-line tools for students to develop an electronic portfolio and career plan. The site contains information and tools to be used by the students to: • Explore skills, abilities and interests • Gather information about career opportunities, needed educational background, salary & career growth potential • Align self-reflection with specific career paths • Create an ongoing reflective journal about the career exploration • Use student-generated information to develop resumes, cover letters and career plans • Ultimately, craft a comprehensive career plan aligned with NYS Career Development and Occupational Standards, with a multimedia final project presentation • Students will also participate in an advisory program intended to develop emotional and social capabilities, as well as promote their cognitive development.

Through the career exploration, students are expected to acquire the following skills: • Reading for informational content • Writing to assert a position • Accessing knowledge about occupational opportunities • Aligning interests, abilities, skills, educational commitment and career opportunities • Using mathematical analysis to project career trends, cost of • living, and salary expectations

12. Using CareerZone.org and producing a multimedia final project (a PowerPoint and oral presentation regarding career choice, including a cover letter, resume & video) will further develop the following skills: • Accessing, processing and producing digital information • Utilizing appropriate software • Navigating websites, search engines, etc. • Oral and written communication skills

Through the advisory component of this Enrichment Program, students are expected to develop the following skill sets: • Academic effectiveness (goal-setting, time management, study/organizational skills, note-taking, etc.) • Productive social interactions (using conflict management and conflict resolution techniques, collaborative skills, participating responsibly in the school and community, etc.) • Affective growth (adjusting to the high school environment, understanding self and productively relating to others, developing  a sense of self-efficacy, etc.)

Freshman Enrichment Program: Summary CTE Freshman Enrichment program is a cost-effective model to support on-time graduation and postsecondary readiness by engaging overage entering 9th grade students in accelerated credit accumulation and career pathway exposure during the summer prior to the start of high school. This program allows CTE to continue helping the toughest to serve students earn the diploma that is hardest to get. • Improved OA 9th grade promotion • Increased opportunities for early career pathway development in CTE high schools • Expanded capacity for CTE high schools to meet the needs of OA/UC students

Program Elements – Project Based Learning • Final Project – digital presentation with oral commentary based on students’ self- exploration aligned with a career goal • Reading progressively complex texts • Analyzing career paths by comparing and contrasting various careers in alignment with students’ predilections, talents and interests • Writing – asserting and defending a position regarding their career choice
