  2. Introduction • The process of extracting spatial features from a digital image • These include: • scanned maps • aerial photographs • digital photographs • Useful for turning data into georeferenced map layers

  3. Digitising • Converting a paper map into a digital format • Incorporating this into a GIS • Also known as geocoding • Points, linear features and areas often employ manual digitising • Associating coordinates and topographical data

  4. On-screen digitising • Captures data from digital images using the mouse • Grants a higher level of accuracy • Allows for editing of features • User creates the layer on the screen with the mouse • Referenced information as a background
