eduroam @ USC An introduction to eduroam
What is eduroam? From www.eduroam.org: eduroam (education roaming) is a secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community. eduroam allows students, researchers and staff from participating institutions to obtain Internet connectivity across campus and when visiting other participating institutions.
Why eduroam? When traveling: • Data over cellular is limited by cost. Wi-Fi is normally available at no cost. • eduroam is a secure wireless network, unlike open/guest wireless. • There are available eduroam networks around the world.
eduroam features When you connect to another university’s eduroam wireless network: • You authenticate against USC’s servers to access the other university’s eduroam network. • The wireless traffic is encrypted, similar to that on USC Wireless Plus.
Current status • ITS has been testing eduroam wireless service at CAL. • The operating systems below have native support for eduroam authentication: • Windows 8.1 • Apple OSX • Apple iOS • Android • RedHat Linux & Ubuntu Linux • Configuration for devices running Windows version 8.0 and below varies, depending on whether the device has an Intel Wi-Fi card.
Availability & Online Documentation eduroam will be available to USC faculty, students, and staff in July. Additional information, including support by device type, is available at: • http://itservices.usc.edu/eduroam/
Configuration & Usability • Users may require assistance in setting up eduroam. • Some devices require configuration of a supplicant (i.e., software used to authenticate); configuration varies by operating system and device. • ITS strongly recommends that users configure eduroam while on campus so that assistance is available from ITS Customer Support or school-based IT groups.
Future Plans ITS is investigating a new authentication system for USC’s eduroam. This new implementation would simplify configuration for users and allow users to configure and authenticate without having to download additional software.
