  1. Troubleshooting 101 The Basics

  2. Three reasons hardware may not work… • Electrical: no moving parts except for electricity that flows through them. Electrical components can fail due to parts overheating, melting, or cracking. • Mechanical: moving parts that may break, jam, or run out of consumable supplies (printers) • Software: software may not work properly due to an incorrect driver installed. (A command cannot be completed.) Example: printer in classroom does not work, even when we see it's installed due to not having the correct driver installed. The processor cannot complete the request.

  3. Common Problems and What To Do…

  4. Nothing Happens… • Start at back of unit and check all cords are plugged in all the way. • Check surge protector. • Check wall outlet.

  5. Computer makes a high-pitched whine… • May be from the hard drive which spins very fast. • It rests on a bearing. As the bearing wears out, it begins to make a whining noise. • This is a sign to back up all important documents. • Once the bearing fails, your hard drive will not spin and the computer will not boot up.

  6. Blank Screen but all other lights are on… • Check to make sure the monitor is on. • Check the cord from the monitor to the tower and make sure it's completely plugged in.

  7. Peripheral device does not work properly… • Printer keyboards, mouse does not work...may be because you have a new OS (Windows 7) and you are trying to connect your old printer to the new OS. • You need a driver that is compatible with the new OS. • You can find the driver on the company's website or google it.

  8. Loss of connectivity… • If connected to the internet by modem, disconnect the power from the modem for a minute and then reconnect. • Call your internet provider.

  9. If all else fails… • Restart the computer! (Control, ALT, Delete) • For peripheral devices, read the manual. • Call someone but provide a screen shot.
