Unit 3 Vocabulary Terms 1-4 1- MIXTURE: two or more materials STIRRED together 2- PROPERTY: the characteristic of an object, something you can observe such as size, color, shape, or texture 3- SOLUTION: a special mixture formed when a material DISSOLVES in water 4- DISSOLVING: a process in which one material disperses uniformly into another material, so that the first material seems to dissappear

  2. Unit 3 Vocabulary Terms 5-6 5- EVAPORATION: causes liquid to dry-up; the liquid turns to gas and disperses into the air, leaving any dissolved solid material behind 6- CRYSTAL: solid form of a material that can be identified by its properties, such as shape, color, and pattern

  3. Unit 3 Vocabulary Terms 7-9 7- SOLVENT: one of two parts of a solution – the liquid portion 8- SOLUTE: one of two parts of a solution – the solid portion that dissolves in the solvent 9- SATURATED SOLUTION: when a solute dissolves in a solvent until no more will dissolve

  4. Unit 3 Vocabulary Term 10 10- SOLUBILITY: property that substances have of dissolving in solvents, such as the solubility of salt in water

  5. Unit 3 Vocabulary Terms 11-13 11- CONCENTRATION: the amount of material dissolved in a measure of liquid 12- DILUTE: to make a solution less concentrated, usually by adding more liquid 13- VOLUME: the three-dimensional space occupied by something (in this investigation – it is the amount of liquid)

  6. Unit 3 Vocabulary Terms 14-16 14- CHEMICAL REACTION: when two or more materials (chemicals) are mixed together and a change occurs, a chemical reaction has taken place 15- PRECIPITATE: a solid material that forms as a product of a reaction**This word is pronounced preh-SIH-puh-tut 16- CHANGE: the process of becoming something different
