Things done well: • Some very intriguing/interesting/entertaining topics! • Lots of voice and personality came through • Most papers had attention-getting intros • Most papers had a very clear purpose • Most papers had conclusions that brought the paper full-circle back to the intro
Purpose: • In this type of essay, your purpose should be implied as you tell the story. You don’t need a thesis, and you don’t need to directly state, “In this essay I will show….” • Your story/essay should speak for itself. (Think of the Toth essay “Going to the Movies.” Did she ever actually state what she wanted us to learn about relationships in her actual story?)
Punctuation problems: commas before a conjunction A conjunction is a word like “and” or “but.” When you create this type of sentence, there should always be a comma BEFORE the conjunction if you are joining complete sentences (with a subject and verb). • Example of “and” joining complete sentences: • Wrong: The sunwas beginning to set and itwas almost time for the fireworks to start. • Right: The sun was beginning to set, and it was almost time for the fireworks to start. • Example of “and” joining only a phrase to a sentence: • Wrong: The sunwas beginning to set, and looked like a bright ball of fire on the horizon. (No subject in the second part.) • Right: The sun was beginning to set and looked like a bright ball of fire on the horizon.
Another example: • How should this sentence be punctuated? Overcoming your fear is not only important because people need to confront their fears sooner than later but because you just might miss out and end up regretting your decision if you never face it.
Answer: Overcoming your fear is not only important because people need to confront their fears sooner than later, but because you just might miss out and end up regretting your decision if you never face it. • Comma goes before “but” because it’s joining two complete sentences. • There’s no comma before “and” because what follows “and” is not a complete sentence. It’s missing a subject and could not read by itself.
