During the normal production operations of oil and gas, the associated water is produced known as produced water. In other words, the produced water is a byproduct of oil and gas production. Usually, it includes formation, condensation and reproduced injection water. The produced water is a complex mixture that has variable compositions within the different fields. It is estimated that for every single barrel of oil produced, there are roughly four to five barrels of water co produced. However, this is inevitable in the oil and gas industry, the rising need to best manage this produced water to derive better outcomes for environment sustainability and economic stability.
Some considerations to produced water management include: • Finding all the sources of water production • Using water shut off technology • Using PWRI and downhole separation systems • Surface treatment for discharge reuse or reinjection • Environmental compliance and monitoring • Implementing PWRI systems and subsea separation measures
A great produced water management practice involves good planning, right people and turnkey tools and equipment. The reservoir engineers, production engineers, chemists and environmental engineers would use an integrated approach along with the right ways to derive successful results that are good for the environment, society and industries.
