Overview of SSTRIDE • SSTRIDE - Science Students Together Reaching Instructional Diversity & Excellence • SSTRIDE is an outreach effort of the FSU College of Medicine (FSUCOM) with support from Florida's Area Health Education Centers (AHEC). The program consists of pre-college and college components.
Undergradute SSTRIDE • The undergraduate component is open to students at Florida State University. • Undergraduate SSTRIDE includes: • Tutorial Learning Center/Mentoring Program • Study skills and time management • Pre-professional advisement • Interviewing workshops • MCAT preparation • Networking opportunities among students and staff • Medical Assisting Program with Lively Technical Center • Physician Partnership Program (clinical volunteer opportunities) • Multicultural Association of Pre-Medical Students
Pre-College SSTRIDE • The pre-college component is open to students from designated Florida middle and high schools in Leon, Gadsden, Madison and Okaloosa Counties • Pre-college SSTRIDE includes: • Accelerated curriculum/enhanced labs for middle school students • Advanced high school science classes with additional labs • ACT preparation course and annual testing • Enrichment and hands-on activities • Educational field trips/career shadowing • Guest speakers • Individualized tutoring and assessment • Research based oral presentations • Community service • Parent involvement
High School Graduate Stats • 100% of the graduates from Crestview High School are attending an accredited undergraduate institution • 15% more than the goal • 47% - Florida State University, 10.5% - University of Florida, 16% - Northwest Florida State College, 10.5% - University of West Florida & 5.3% -Troy University, University of Central Florida, University of Alabama • 100% received scholarships • 1 student accepted into FSUCOM Honors Program • 2 National Merit Scholars
Middle School Retention • On average, the retention rate from middle to high school from 2006 - 2010 was 95.6% • 15.6% more than the goal of 80% • Total of 96 students transitioned to high school • 2 students released from program
Tracking Student Progress • Surveys • Coordinator completes a monthly survey • Teachers complete a survey at the end of each semester • Students complete a survey each semester • Parents complete an annual survey • ACT • All Students take the ACT at the end of the school year • Grades • Grade checks every 4.5 weeks for middle school • Grade checks every 9 weeks for high school • 3.8% of students fell below a B average at least one nine weeks during the 2008- 2009 academic year
Recruitment • Spring of 7th grade • 3.0 GPA, 3 or above FCAT scores, good attendance, no disciplinary referrals required to apply • Student Application including essay, parent and student contracts, 4 recommendations (science and math teachers, and 2 from other core teachers, guidance counselors or administrators) • Interview by SSTRIDE staff with student and parent/guardian

Simulation Camp @ PJC • Day 1: Students were prepared for the mock disaster taking place on Day 2 • Day 2: Mock Disaster • A crop duster crashed and exploded contaminating passengers and bystanders. • Victims were decontaminated, sent to triage for assessment and treated in the ER. • Day 3: Hematology lab, EKG, Breath/Heart sounds • Day 4: “Scrub-in”, X-rays & Debriefing,
The doctors and nurses assisted students in treating ER patients.
