  1. FNAL Target Related Capabilities PASI 2013 Working Group 1 P. Hurh (FNAL)

  2. Potential or Available Target Test Areas • Radiation Damage Irradiation- • Currently no facility lending itself to low energy irradiation • Some areas in front of beam absorbers at 400 MeV and 120 GeV • Low flux compared to near future targets • Areas not currently set-up to handle sample exchange, temperature control, etc… • Target single pulse testing- • Possibility exists at AP-0 Target Hall for NuMI/NOvA intensity pulse (~5e13 ppp) with smaller spot size (0.2 mm sigma) • Would require extraction line re-configuration (re-installation of kicker system) PASI 2013 WG1 FNAL Capabilities

  3. Potential or Available Target Test Areas Hadron Monitor Slot US of NuMI Absorber AP-0 Target Vault PASI 2013 WG1 FNAL Capabilities

  4. Materials Science • Fairly capable basic materials testing lab (optical microscopy, tensile tester, hardness) • Some more advanced equipment (SEM with EDS) • Equipment primarily used in support of SC magnet and RF cavity development, but can accept low dose rate samples for analysis PASI 2013 WG1 FNAL Capabilities

  5. Remote Handling/Hot Cell • Although we have quite a bit of experience with handling highly activated components (100 R/hr range) for transport and installation, we do not have much experience with truly remote repair or high precision assembly work • Hot cell just completed in new C-0 Remote Handling Facility • Transport Cask/Storage Bay system for handling large (4-8 m2) PASI 2013 WG1 FNAL Capabilities

  6. Remote Handling/Hot Cell C-0 Remote Handling Facility PASI 2013 WG1 FNAL Capabilities

  7. Design/Analysis/Simulation • High Power Target Group • Basic MARS for energy deposition, DPA, gas production • ANSYS Thermo-mechanical • ANSYS (LS-DYNA soon) Structural Dynamic/Fracture • Accelerator Physics Center • Advanced MARS analysis (MARS code author(s)) • Accelerator Physics Optics codes • PPD Mechanical Analysis Group • ANSYS Thermo-mechanical • CFX/Fluent CFD PASI 2013 WG1 FNAL Capabilities

  8. Design/Analysis/Simulation • MARS 15 Monte-Carlo code to obtain energy deposition values in target/window for particular beam parameters. • Thermal and structural analysis performed in ANSYS • Temperature dependent material properties • Analysis of elastic and plastic material response • Normal stress at Be window edge • Future simulations will use the LS-DYNA software to model fracture/failure • Further validation with in beam experiments PASI 2013 WG1 FNAL Capabilities

  9. Manufacturing • Good quality precision machine shops • Experience in fabrication for ultra-high vacuum • Full featured QA Lab and metrology • Good experience and knowledge in brazing, welding, and diffusion bonding • Have experience with prototyping and building unique target facility components (horns, targets, striplines, detectors) PASI 2013 WG1 FNAL Capabilities

  10. Manufacturing PASI 2013 WG1 FNAL Capabilities
