2013-14 Industry Wide Goal The Plastic Problem • We currently recover only 5% of the plastics we produce. • Roughly 50% is buried in landfills, some is remade into durable goods, and some ends up washed out to sea. • An estimated 14 billion pounds of rubbish, much of it plastic, is dumped in the world's oceans every year.
2013-14 Industry Wide Goal It’s estimated that each year, 300 million tonnes of plastic is made – about half of this is used just once then thrown away • Plastic Facts The production of plastic uses an incredible amount of fossil fuels. Most estimates put the figure at around 8% of the world’s oil production Over the last ten years we have produced more plastic than during the whole of the last century An average individual uses 130 plastic bags per year A plastic cup can take 50 - 80 years to decompose 1 million plastic cups are used just on airline flights in the US every 6 hours The average office worker uses about 500 disposable cups every year. Plastic accounts for around 10% of the total waste we generate it takes about 1/4 of a litre of oil to produce a 1 litre water bottle
2013-14 Industry Wide Goal • Take a Plastic Challenge Today! • Your organisation can make a huge difference to the global plastic problem and we are challenging to you to take one plastic challenge over the next 12 months….and it is so easy to do. • Your challenge is this: • Stop using all plastic disposable cups on and off shore for twelve months and use an environmentally sustainable alternative such as veg ware. • This one action would: • • Reduce the number of plastic cups used the oil and gas industry in the UK by millions. • • Reduce landfill and increase the amount of compostable waste from your organisation. • • Reduce accidental disposal of plastic cups in to the ocean. • • Show your serious environmental commitment.
