Round tableScience in times of crisis: cut or expand?! Carpathian Summer School of Physics 2012 Exotic Nuclei and Nuclear/Particle Astrophysics (IV). “From nuclei to stars” June 24 - July 7, 2012, Sinaia, Romania
Science in times of crisis: cut or expand?! Purpose:discuss about crises and how to respond to crises! To others and among us! Two types of crises: • “major” crises (of the society, not of science!) economical, social and moral (wars, major natural disasters …) • Cut?! budgets – simplest solution for managers (reduce personnel also, or conserve specialists?!) • Expand: increase investment in education, in research, improve road from science to techn R&D to economy Scientists’ response: • Involvement?! • Short term/long term?!
b) “minor crises” (typically induced thru media): “The sky is falling! The sky is falling!” • Using peoples’ fears of unknown(s) • “micro blackholes” – when LHC started in 2008?! • “dangers of nuclear energy” – close nuclear power plants in Germany to buy electricity from France (produced …?!); stop all reactors in Japan … • “Fukushima in milk” • Inducing fears • “they sought yellow cake” … • Stem cell research … Scientists’ response: • Punctual/fast response • Continuous education of the population – not only in/by schools, but also after
