Campaigning • How do political parties campaign? • Do you think campaigning is important?
Methods of propaganda • Stacked Cards- show one side • “Obama has the best record on the environment” • Just Plain Folks- show as one of the people • “My parents were ordinary hardworking people like you and taught me proper ideals.” • Transfer- combine ideas to transfer attitude toward one idea to the another • Ex. Obama campaigning in jeans showing he is apart of the working class. • Glittering generalities- values w/o explanations • “If reelected, Obama will bring world peace” • Bandwagon- everybody’s doing it • “Polls show Romney is winning…get out and vote for him too!” • Euphemisms- call things by better names • “Unemployment is lower than last year” (It actually still is higher than it was under the previous president)
Public Opinion is Important! • We find out through polls. • Straw polls • Unreliable, no control over who responds (ex: internet polls, voluntary polls) • Scientific polling • get accurate information using some sort of statistical analysis. • Exit Polls • taken outside poll places (right after voting)
