  2. Writing About a Quote Key Aspects: • Put the quote in your own words • AGREE OR DISAGREE WITH THE QUOTE • WRITE THE QUOTE • Then Make the Connection! • How can you connect or relate the quote to……. • History???? • Literature???? • Current Events???? • Anecdote about a family member or friend??? • Cinema????

  3. Historical Perspective Think….I Wonder if there’s anything I know about history that can help me understand the meaning of this quote…. “NO PAIN, NO GAIN”… During the American Revolution there was a lot of injuries, deaths, and problems, but there were also a lot of good things that happened, like independence….

  4. Literary Perspective • Does this quote remind you of a book, or character, that you read about? “No pain, no gain.” In Hatchet, Brian Robeson realizes that he has to go through a lot of struggles, but he still has a chance to survive. Sometimes life is tough, but we keep on going….

  5. What About a Current Event? • Is there a current event topic you can apply to this quote? • Think…. Do I know of a current event that has something to do with this quote? • I read that a baseball player spent several weeks working out his sprained muscle. I guess it really was worth it, because he did a great job by helping his team win the playoffs.

  6. Think About an Anecdote • An anecdote is a short, humorous story, that often teaches us some lesson about life. • “No pain, no gain.” This reminds me of the time my son, Billy tried to get to the next level in his Jr. ROTC physical fitness test. After weeks of bruises and aching muscles, he finally did it. His pain paid off because he made it to the next level.

  7. Pull it Together • Important things to remember…. Think about the quote in your own perspective. Put the quote in your own words. • Relate… • Something historical • Something in literature • A current event • An anecdote about a family member or friend

  8. OH SCAKey Points to Remember! • OWN WORDS • HISTORY • STORY REFERENCE / LITERATURE • CURRENT EVENTS • ANECOTE

  9. Don’t forget to serve it up RARE! Respond to the question by….. • Restating the question in a creative way…and…. • Answer by using……. • Reasons ……..and…. • Elaborations……. • Don’t forget to restate for a closing.

  10. Example • Many times in life, we experience or suffer a conflict between what we “ought to do” and what we “want to do.” • Choose a time when life presented this dilemma either to you or to someone else. Using an example from literature, history, science, film, or your own experience…… • Write a 3 paragraph essay describing the two conflicting choices and explaining the consequences of the decision made.

  11. What Should I Do? • Follow the learning zone path. • Each zone will be responsible for a different perspective. • Write your example on the poster paper, big enough so that it can be seen from the board. • When you hear the chime, go to the next zone and work on a new perspective. • As you are working, mini lessons will be going on with the teacher, so you may be called out of your group. • Please be use all group rules. • If you’re having a problem, talk to the members of your group, but if you’re still confused, write your group name on the help board. • When you get to a new zone, be sure that you create your own example, and do not copy the work of the previous group.
