Features and Benefits of Learning Point Navigator • Provides teachers with teaching and learning resources that are linked to the Minnesota Academic Standards • Allows teachers to give assignments designed to address current classroom content in order to help students gain proficiency in the identified standards • Allows students and their families to access teacher-selected learning resources when they are at home so learning can continue outside the classroom
Creating Class Rosters before Using Learning Point Navigator • For teachers to use Learning Point Navigator, District Assessment Coordinators must create class rosters. • There are two ways to create class rosters: • Through TIDE • Through the Online Reporting System • Detailed steps on creating class rosters in both systems will be available in the user guides for these systems.
Welcome Page • The first way to access Learning Point Navigator is directly through the portal. • On the portal homepage, select the Learning Point Navigator icon.
Login Page • At the Login page, enter your username and password to enter the Learning Point Navigator environment. • This login information will be generated and emailed to users as they are added through TIDE.
Getting to Learning Point Navigator from the Online Reporting System • For the MCA 3–8 Math test, teachers can also access Learning Point Navigator through the Online Reporting System. • Within the Online Reporting System, users can navigate to a report by standards for a particular group of students. • Selecting the “Find Resources” button next to a particular standard will take you directly to a list of resources in Learning Point Navigator that are related to that standard. Browse Resources: Filtered Search • Users will be taken to this Filtered/Faceted search page in the Browse Resources section of Learning Point Navigator. • On the left, you can see that the particular subject, grade, strand and standard filters have been set based on the choice from the Online Reporting System: in this example, a 7th grade Mathematics standard.
Homepage • On the Learning Point Navigator Homepage, users can view assignments, view classes and find teaching materials. • The general navigation bar at the top allows users to access active assignments, archived assignments, classes, students and resources. General Navigation Chat Room Access
Finding Teaching Materials • Selecting “Find Teaching Materials” allows teachers to browse through resources. • In November, Math and Reading resources will be available. Science resources will be added in January. • These resources can be filtered by grade, content and keyword. • This helps teachers select the materials most appropriate for their students. Assigning Materials to Students • Once an appropriate resource is selected, a teacher can choose to assign that resource to students. • An assignment may be given to an individual student or group of students, the entire class roster or multiple class rosters. Individual Students Entire Roster
Sample Assignment: Opening View • Once a resource has been selected for assignment, the teacher can create a message about what the students are supposed to do and which portion of the assignment the teacher would like them to complete. Teacher-created Message Resource
Student Self-Assessment Questions with Feedback • The guided practice section of the assignment gives the student self-assessment questions and provides him or her with immediate feedback. Feedback
Quiz Questions • In the quiz section, a score is provided when the student completes the questions. • Once the student has completed the quiz, feedback will be shown in the student’s assignments folder.
Active Assignments Page • The Active Assignments page includes the date when an assignment opens for the students, the due date (when the assignment closes for the students), the assignment title, who it has been assigned to, the subject and an “Edit” button. Assignment Features
Report: By Student • Teachers can see the students’ individual results on a particular assignment. • Here the report for the “Comparing to Tenths” assignment has been selected.
Report: By Benchmark • Teachers can also view an assignment report by the benchmarks it assesses.
View Class Report • By selecting a particular roster, a teacher can see the average score, the low score and the high score for the students included in the roster for the three given assignments.
Student Assignments • Teachers can elect to see the assignment results for a particular student listed in a roster. • This page shows how the student did on each of the assignments. Investigate
Student Assignments: Quiz Results • If you view the quiz for the “Comparing to Tenths” assignment, you will see that the questions the student answered incorrectly are highlighted in pink. • Examining these more closely might help teachers make additional instructional decisions.
Learning Point Navigator Virtual Classrooms
Class/Student Settings • Teachers can decide to enable the Chat feature and the Discussion Board feature. • Teachers can decide to turn on the Chat and Discussion Board features for a particular class or roster. • The teacher also decides when to turn off the Chat and the Discussion Board features.
Class Chat Rooms • Class Chat access appears in the lower left corner of the Learning Point Navigator Homepage. • Selecting this option will bring up a list of the classes with which the teacher is associated. • Selecting an individual student name allows the teacher to have a separate chat with that student. Virtual Classrooms: Discussion Topic • Another feature of Virtual Classrooms is the Discussion Board. • Note that there are options to add an audio or video file in addition to text. • The file types that are supported are listed on the right side of the screen. Upload a file
Learning Point Navigator Student and Family Access
Student Homepage • Once a student logs in, he or she will be taken to the My Assignments page. • This page displays the student’s active assignments along with any chats or discussions that are taking place. • To begin an assignment, the student clicks the “Start” button. Start Assignment
In Progress Assignment • If a student has started an assignment, the status bar shows the student’s progress toward completion. Continue Assignment
“Need Help?” Button • While students are working on an assignment, they can click the “Need Help?” button. • This will bring up related resources that may help students fill some of the gaps.
Features of Learning Point Navigator • A resource for supplementary materials to aid instruction including • student activities • lesson plans • meta-instruction/professional development • A system for assigning resources to students and reviewing results • A system that allows students and their families access to teacher-selected learning resources • A system that allows students to enter into online discussions with other students and their teachers while they are working on their specific assignments • A system that allows students and their families to evaluate learning and select additional instructional materials for practice
