  3. Objectives: After today’s lesson, you will: • Identify three factors contributing to the growth of the New England Colonies. • Compare and contrast different accounts of the settlement of New England

  4. Role of the Protestant Reformation • Different groups protested different teachings and practices • Lutherans • Calvinists • Anglicans • The religious split contributed to the growth of unified countries

  5. The Puritans • Anglican Church very close to the Catholic Church • Almost all teachings were the same • The King became the head of the Church, not the Pope • Development of Puritans in England • Wished to “purify” Catholic elements from the Anglican Church • Found their efforts blocked by the kings and court

  6. Pilgrims • Separatists • “Church of England too corrupt for salvation” • Set sail for Virginia • Mayflower Compact • Self-Government with Town Meeting • Only Church members voted • Absorbed by Massachusetts Bay

  7. The Puritans in New England • Massachusetts Bay Company chartered in 1629 • Provide a haven for persecuted Puritans • One thousand set out in 1630 • Sought to establish a “City Upon a Hill” • How a Christian community should live • Model for the world to follow

  8. The Puritan Community • Mixed Church and State • Only Puritan men could vote • All citizens supported the Church • State had jurisdiction over ministry • Required construction of churches and schools • Strong family ties and family stability • Puritan communities settled as groups from England • Families settled together • Built strong communities

  9. Summary: • Identify two ways you would improve today’s lesson.
