Research paper rough drafts:50 points possible, 2 weeks to complete. 90-100% = Excellent (45-50 points) 80-89% = Good (40-44 points) 70-79% = Acceptable (35-39 points) 60-69% = Deficient (30-34 points) 0-59% = Seriously deficient (0-29 points) How would YOU award points?
Your instructions: • From the assignment handout: A first draft …. is due on May 3/4. It must include at least your Plan of Investigation and Summary of Evidence (Parts A and B), and will be worth 50 points. Your approved topic and outline must be attached. • From SchoolNotes.com: Finish research paper first draft (at least parts A and B must be complete)
My bottom line: • Prior work attached, Parts A & B well done, good progress on other parts of paper = 45-50 points • Prior work attached, Parts A & B well done, some effort on other parts of paper = 40-44 points • Prior work attached, Parts A & B done OK, little or nothing on other parts of paper = 35-39 points • Prior work missing or Parts A & B flawed, little or nothing on other parts of paper = 30-34 points • Prior work missing and Parts A & B flawed, little or nothing on other parts of paper = 0-29 points
Your take-aways • It’s more important for you to learn intelligent work strategies in academia and the real world than it is to learn history • If you want a lot out of life, put a lot out • Putting in the least effort, at the last minute, is not an intelligent choice
There IS another way: An easy and smarter alternative • When you get an important assignment, set your own deadline 25% earlier • Carefully read all instructions; refer back frequently • Start on it that day, if only for a few minutes • Come back to it a bit at a time (the power of subconcious) • Meet or beat your own deadline • Make sure you met or exceeded all requirements • Total time spent – about the same, just managed better • Watch the quality of your work and grades improve; watch your stress level drop as YOU control your own calendar instead of the calendar controlling you
Let’s try this again; 2nd draft (revised due date: May 22/23) • Prior work attached, Parts A-F well done, only minor corrections needed = 45-50 points • Prior work attached, Parts A-F done, some additional work needed = 40-44 points • Prior work attached, Parts A-F mostly complete and/or need significant improvement = 35-39 points • Prior work missing or Parts A-F incomplete; needs significant improvement = ZERO points Quit turning in half-assed work!
