The Principles • The Addition Principle: If we add the same amount to both sides of an equation, the result is an equivalent equation.a = b is equivalent to a + c = b + c • Multiplication Principle: If we multiply the same non-zero amount to both sides of an equation, the result is an equivalent equation.a = b is equivalent to ac = bc

  8. Activity #2 • We are going to work a problem on a separate sheet that is an in class group activity. These activities count as a quiz in the grade book. • Form into groups of three. Take a minute and introduce yourself and tell the person how the class is going for you and any ideas on how to succeed in math  • We will take about three minutes or so to work on the problem solo, then as a group. It is OK if you don’t get it right away!!

  9. Cookies! • Elliot bought some cookies. On his way home he gave ½ of them and ½ a cookie to his mom. He ran into his aunt on his way to CR and gave her ½ of the remaining cookies and ½ of a cookie. Just before coming to class he was stopped by an old friend and he gave her ½ of the remaining cookies and ½ of a cookie. When he got to his desk he had ½ dozen cookies left. How many did he start with?
