Equine Viral Arteitis • Viral disease, highly contagious • Produces lesions in the small muscular arteries. • Most severe in very young and very old horses, and in horses under stress (weather, work, etc.). • Worldwide occurrence, however most often seen in the US, usually outbreaks occur on breeding farms or at equine sporting events. • http://www.aphis.usda.gov/vs/ceah/cahm/Equine/eq98eva.htm

  2. Symptoms of Equine Viral Arteritis • This disease can be confused with Equine Rhinopneumonitis. The occurrence of abortions during or just following illness in characteristic of Viral Arteritis, mares usually appear healthy at the time of Equine Rhinopneumonitis induced abortions. • Equine Viral Arteritis can also be confused with Equine Influenza as many of the respiratory symptoms are similar.

  3. Prevention of Equine Viral Arteritis • Horses of all ages should be vaccinated annually using a modified live virus vaccine. • Foals under six months of age or pregnant mares in the last two months of gestation should not be vaccinated.
