Why do we need a facility? • Research and demonstrate current indoor pest identification and IPM strategies • Help bridge the gap between newly licensed and no experience • SPIs and PMPs more knowledgeable on latest technology • Reduce number of inaccurate inspections and unnecessary pesticide applications • Facilities in other states (GA, LA, IN, SC, OK) have been very successful

  3. Current WSU training • Prelicense training • 2 + times a year • Lecture and damaged wood and insect samples • Hands-on field course

  4. So… Western Region Structural Pest Research and Demonstration Facility at WSU Puyallup

  5. What will the facility look like? Basic structure with different types of construction practices and building materials

  6. What will the facility look like? • Not a classroom facility but there is one very close • Basic electric but no water • An elevated crawl space Basement dugout in OK

  7. What will the facility look like? • Removable wall sections to insert damaged articles and insects Dampwood Termite Carpenter ants

  8. Training and Demonstration • General inspection knowledge • Pest ID and biology • Damage caused by WDO • Conducive conditions • Legal requirements • Building construction and maintenance • Inspection & Safety equipment

  9. The facility has many partners! • Basic funding secured • University, Association, Industry, Regulatory participation in building design

  10. Excavation started this summer • Building to begin Fall 2005 • Donations committed from architects and developers

  11. NEXT… • Structural Pest IPM Curriculum Development • Prioritize research projects
