Where the Lilies Bloom Authors: Vera and Bill Cleaver
Historical Background • The Civil War left the South a ruined land. When slavery collapsed, the social and economic situation changed. Some wealthy plantation owners still had land, but they had no slaves and no money to pay workers. • As a result, ‘sharecropping’ or ‘tenancy farming’ came about: the landlord provided the land, equipment and sometimes credit to anyone willing to work the land. After the landlord received his rent and his share of profits, very little was left. The sharecropper usually stayed in dept. • Although the number of sharecroppers has decreased since the 1960s, it does still exist in some parts of the rural South.
Setting • Trial Valley between Sugar Boy and Old Joshua Mountain. These are two make believe mountains in the Great Smokey Mountains of the border of western North Carolina. • The Great Smokies are renowned for their plush vegetation, which include some 100 species of trees and over 1300 kinds of flowering plants. • The Luther family are sharecroppers on the land belonging to Kiser Pease and his sister.
