  2. Section 1: The First Israelites 1800 BC: Israelites came to Canaan Monotheistic (belief in 1 God!) Spoke Hebrew Recorded their history in the Bible Were mostly herders and traders Settled in what is now Lebanon, Israel, and Jordan

  3. Early Israelites Abraham’s Journey Abraham (Father of Judaism)- brought them to Canaan

  4. Abraham and Jacob Jacob means “struggles with God” Grandson Jacob raised 12 sons who later became the 12 tribes of Israel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfNMB7LAnRY 100 years later- drought and famine hit, they traveled to Egypt

  7. The Ten Commandments (TORAH) Moses received them from God on Mount Sinai Israelites made a covenant with God to follow his laws and He would lead them to Canaan Established the “rule of law”- everyone should be treated equally and have to follow the same laws.

  10. The Promised Land The Israelites traveled 40 years across the desert to return to Canaan Moses died Joshua became leader The Israelites retook Canaan from the Canaanites and divided it among the 12 tribes

  11. The Promised Land (cont.) • Joshua marched around the walled city of Jericho for 6 days then blew trumpets. The walls all fell and they took over the city.

  12. The Promised Land (cont.) The Fighting Judges: military leaders (example: Deborah) Deborah was the first women judge 1100 BC: Israelites controlled the center of Canaan, while the Canaanites kept to the coast Phoenician Alphabet: group of Canaanites created the alphabet

WIO (goes on the right side of the book) Due on Monday! • Make a Hero Poster for one of the characters, Abraham, Jacob, Moses, Deborah, or Joshua • Must include: • Hero’s name • Written description of what the person has done, (who what why when where how) • Date for when poster would have been made (BC), • Quote of what someone else said about the Hero

King Solomon • Son of David • Finished the temple (symbol and center of Jewish religion) • Known for his proverbs • Also had heavy taxes and sent northern Israelite men to work in mines • Kingdom split into 2 upon his death: • Kingdom of Israel (capital: Samaria) • Southern kingdom: Judah (capital: Jerusalem)

  18. The Fall of Israel Religion forgotten by most, and prophets were sent to bring it back to them 722 BC: Assyrians conquered Israel and scattered the tribes Fearing God’s anger, many Assyrians (aka Samaritans) began to follow the faith

The Fall of Judah 620 BC: Egypt conquered Judah, 605 BC: Chaldeans conquer Egypt and Judah -allowed to keep king 1st rebellion- Jews and Egyptians unite 597 BC: defeated by Nebuchadnezzar Punished severely: 10,000 Jews forced to move to Babylon (The Babylonian Exile) 586 BC: another revolt in Jerusalem, also not successful Temple destroyed and took thousands more to Babylon
