Results Just Out • The GMC have just released the results of the last Trainer Survey. • There was a significant increase in the response rate from 21% in 2009 to 53%in 2010. • A sample of the key results on how well trainers in Wales are supported in comparison to the rest of the UK as well as your local ranking are contained within these slides. • You can see more scores or find out more detail behind the results contained within these slides on the GMC’s online reporting tool at http://reports.pmetb.org.uk/
Consultant Supervision The National Perspective:- Your Local Ranking In Wales:- • The score looks at whether you consider there to be any barriers to supervising your trainees. • Out of 20 UK Deaneries Wales ranked 11th with 38% of you indicating that your workload was a barrier to adequate supervision. • Your local ranking in Wales is illustrated by the red dot on the opposite graph.
Employer Structure & Process The National Perspective:- Your Local Ranking In Wales:- • The score reviews whether your employer has effective structures and processes to manage a trainee in difficulty. • Out of 20 UK Deaneries Wales ranked 16thalthough 76% of you reported that your employer did have effective structures and processes. • In addition, 82% of you reported that you thought the Deanery had effective structures and processes to manage a trainee in difficulty ranking 8thout of 20 UK Deaneries.
Training vs Service Demands The National Perspective Your Local Ranking In Wales:- • The score considers the impact that service demand has on training provision. • Wales ranked 19thout of all 20 UK Deaneries with:- • 52% of you reporting that service demands resulted in trainees being unable to take advantage of formal teaching. • 59% of you reporting that service demands meant trainees were unable to take advantage of clinical learning opportunities.
Time The National Perspective:- Your Ranking In Wales:- • The score looks at the extent to which your are spending un-contracted timeon educational activity. • The results show that there is a reliance on your goodwill to train with Wales ranking 3rdout of 20 UK Deaneries. • We are starting to address this through the ‘Educational Supervision Tripartite Agreement’ which is currently being piloted in some sites as part of the Supervising the Route to Excellence Programme.
Educational Supervisor Appraisal The National Perspective:- Your Ranking In Wales:- • The score indicates the percentage of trainers who had been appraised for their educational responsibilities. • Wales ranked lowest out of all 20 UK Deaneries with just 37% of all consultants indicating that they had been appraised for your educational role and only 26% of Training Programme Directors.
Training Support The National Perspective:- Your Local Ranking In Wales:- • The score considers your perception of how supported you feel in your training role. • Out of 20 UK Deaneries Wales ranked 18thwith:- • 60% of you indicating that your employing organisation was supportive of training. • 85% of you stating that your department was supportive of training.
Role Awareness The National Perspective Your Local Ranking In Wales:- • The score indicates trainers understanding of their role in the training and assessment of trainees. • Wales ranked 11thout of all 20 UK Deaneries with:- • 83% of you indicating that you were clear about your roles and responsibilities. • The extent to which trainers are aware of the necessary curriculum outcomes by grade was:- • 81% Foundation. • 86% Core • 67% GP Trainees. • 95% Specialty Trainees
Workplace Based Assessments The National Perspective Your Ranking In Wales:- • The score shows the percentage of trainers who perform Workplace Based Assessments or have received the appropriate training. • Wales ranked 15thout of all 20 UK Deaneries with:- • 61.3% of you being trained in the last 3 years. • 15.2% of you having been trained more than three years ago. • 23.5 % of you never having had training.
This Isn’t News To Me What Difference Will It Really Make? • This increased response rate last year means the results are more representative of the majority and we can start to use the feedback you provide to raise the profile of the training role and enhance the level of support available to you. Since Last Year:- • We have started piloting the ‘Educational Supervision Tripartite Agreement’ which amongst other things makes a recommendation of the amount of SPA time that should be provided for Educational Supervision and we would like to use the survey as one source of evidence to monitor its implementation. • We have also developed a suite of online training materials specifically for trainers which you can find out more about on our website at http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/pgmde/sections/hospital/elu/ProfessionalDevelopmentinEducation/professional-development-in-education.html
Why Not Have Your Say? • We realise that increasing the support available to trainers won’t happen overnight but you can help in the longer term by giving us evidence to help drive changes forward. • From 2nd May 2011 you’ll have a chance to have your say on these key areas when the GMC will issue you with an invitation to participate in this years survey.
