Plumbing Systems Lesson

1. Mr. Thomas Crapper was a plumber in the late 1800’s who held nine patents for improvements to drains, water closets, manhole covers and pipe joints.

2. Plumbing Systems Lesson • 10th Grade Technology Class • One or Two 50 minute class periods depending on speed of students • Each student has access to their own computer with Powerpoint.

3. Behavioral Objectives • Given a grouping of photos, the student will correctly identify 4 out of 5 plumbing tools. • Given photographs of each, correctly describe the differences between valves, fixtures, and faucets. • Given a description of a clogged drain problem, correctly describe the steps to unclog the drain.

4. Instructions: You may work through this lesson at your own pace. Simply click on the arrows to continue or go back to the previous page. Watch for toilet buttons throughout the lesson. 9. What is a plumbing system? Plumbing includes all the piping and fixtures that provide water for drinking, cooking, bathing, and laundry; as well as a means of disposing of wastewater. (Yuck!)

10. Putting in a plumbing system takes a lot of thought………………….When a house is being built, plumbers and carpenters must work together so the frame of the house is prepared for plumbing to be put in.

11. Plumbing can be dangerous, so there are codes that must be followed in order to keep everyone safe. A code is a set of rules that can be enforced by law!!!

12. Some Common Colds Codes • UPC (Uniform Plumbing Code) • BOCA (Basic Builders Code) • IBOC (International Conference of Building Officials) • NPC (National Plumbing Code) • SPCCI (Standard Plumbing Code) **Local codes usually adopt all or parts of the UPC or other plumbing codes. Once adopted, codes can be enforced by law!!

14. Plumbers rely on math to make accurate measurements and calculations so all the pipes and tanks fit together to work properly.

15. In the plumbing business, errors cost money, so you better know your stuff!!!

16. There are 2 Types of Plumbing Systems • Water Supply System 2) Drainage, Waste, and Venting (DWV)

17. Water Supply System • Distributes water under pressure throughout the structure for drinking, bathing, cooking, and laundry. • This is a 2 pipe system. • One pipe carries cold water, and the other hot water.

18. DWV • Carries away wastewater and solid waste from bathrooms, kitchens, and laundries. • This subsystem is not under pressure, and must be properly vented to prevent wastewater form entering the drinking water supply.

19. The plumbers tool belt carries many of the same tools used in carpentry and electrical work. Simple plumbing tasks only require a few tools, most commonly a wrench. While larger plumbing jobs use a variety of tools.

25. A Few Reaming and Threading Tools Used for work on metal pipes. Reaming the end of a pipe removes the burrs caused by cutting.

33. Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) • Plastic Piping • Has lower thermal expansion that makes long runs easier to control • Joined with a two-step primer/solvent and suitable fittings

34. What is the difference between a valve, a fixture, and a faucet?

35. Valves Devices that control the flow of water in the water supply system. They are installed at certain places on the lines so that water can be shut off easily.

36. Faucets Valves that permit controlled amounts of water as needed for use in a building. They deliver water to sinks, showers, and bathtubs, but can also deliver water to a hose or bucket.

37. Fixtures Water-using devices such as sinks, bathtubs, urinals, stools, or showers. They are attached to the plumbing system and receive water from the supply system.

46. All drains can become clogged. It is important to know different ways to unclog a drain so that you may avoid overflows or future problems!!

47. For a slow drain……. Use chemical cleaners, such as Drano to solve the problem. Be careful, these kind of chemicals are dangerous and can make you very sick or even kill you if they are not used properly!!

48. For more serious clogs….. You may use a plunger, a snake, or a closet auger. Plungers apply pressure to the clog Augers and snakes reach and dislodge the obstruction.
