  2. CSE Manual of Style, 7th Edition The skinny… Cost: $50 to $60 Weighs 4.2 lbs 658 pages Amazon.com Reviews: “…the 7th edition is so poor as to render it completely useless as a reference. .” – Freeman “[As] a science proofreader and typesetter…I wonder if the rest of the book has similar mistakes [to the ones I already found]and [if] the information is reliable. . . it should be used warily.” --  Javier Bezos Lopez

  3. GOAL: Final Manuscripts Present a paper in a format familiar to persons who read scientific literature.

  4. Disclaimer • The basic components of an original research article are introduction, methods, results, and discussion. CSE does not specify a format for the body of a college paper, so ask your instructor for clarification.

  5. Text page format of essays • Fonts • 12-point or 10-point font. The typeface is generally roman. A serif font is commonly used in publication (eg, times roman), though sans serif like Helvetica is also accepted. • Indents (Varies by journal) • One-half inch • Spacing (Varies by journal) • Double space throughout unless instructed otherwise, such as: • Single space within the abstract, notes, titles and headings, block quotes, tables and figures, and references (everything but the main text), double space before and after each single spaced block. • Block paragraph spacing is recommended for final manuscripts. • Page numbers • Every page of a research paper is numbered consecutively starting with the title page. Do not change numbering systems through the text, even with lengthy data sets or appendixes. • Italics • Used for journal names and Latin

  6. Cover page • Article Title • Byline • Author Affiliation and Site of Research • Abstract • Bibliographic Reference • Keywords • Financial and Other Support • Text on the Cover Page • Footline

  7. Style of Essay Titles, Headings and Subheadings Format Title and Major Section Flush Left and Bold Title Case Applies Second Level Heading Flush Left Title Case Third Level Heading Italics Small Caps Third Level Heading Italics Title Case NOTE: The third level heading is a run-in or paragraph heading

  8. In-Text Citations: • Similar to APA, in text references consist of the last name of the author or authors and the year of publication (Grogan 2012). However, a comma is not used. • Works by the same author published in different years can be separated by a comma (Grogan 2010, 2012). • If different works are published by the same author in the same year, add an alphabetical designator (Grogan 2012a, 2012b).

  9. In-Text Citations: • Separate two authors by the word “and” (Grogan and McCarty, 2009). • If there are more than three authors, in the text list only the first author’s name, followed by et al. (Grogan et al. 2010). • When several sources are used to make the same point, separate them with a semicolon (Dawson and Briggs 1974; Dawson and Jones 1974; Brown 1980).

  10. Direct Quotes in the Paper Direct quotes (in “” marks) must be cited with the appropriate reference EXAMPLE: He points out that although these works are at risk for "traumatic injuries, noise-induced hearing loss, needle sticks, hydrogen sulfide and carbon monoxide poisonings, and infectious diseases,” (Smith, 1990) respiratory illness is the most recognized occupational risk. • EXAMPLE: • The report (Jones 1988) further cited "lingering confusion about the vaccination program's aims.” • NOTE: • Cite as close to material as possible, not necessarily at the end of the sentence.

  11. Reference List Basics NOTE: • Present numbered references in alphabetical order on a separate page at the end of the manuscript. • “References,” “Cited References,” “Literature Cited” or “Bibliography” • Works with no more than ten (10) authors: include all authors' surnames and first and middle name initials separated by commas. Do not use periods for initials (Garcia EF 2011). • Works with ten (10) or more authors: list only the first ten (10) names followed by "et al" or “and others” • Some journals only require 3-6 authors Remember: Some Journals Vary in their requirements!

  21. The DOI: Digital Object Identifier • The DOI is like a social security number for a source. It is meant to help readers find the exact source you are referencing. • Like ISBN for books • Can go in the Exten. Notes. • All DOI numbers begin with a 10 and contain a prefix and a suffix separated by a slash. • Not all sources have DOIs. • If the source has a DOI, cite it after the rest of the citation is finished: EXAMPLE Savage E, Ramsay M, White J, Beard S, Lawson H, Hunjan R, Brown D.
