  2. Deterrent • Made to be a deterrent rather than a weapon. • ‘Their appearance was enough of a deterrent.’ • Nuclear submarines were thought of as the most survivable deterrent of the Cold War.

  3. Why they were desirable • Possessed high underwater speed. • Almost undetectable. • Dived so far under water. • Could far from anywhere.

  4. Government vs Public • The government wanted nuclear submarines and thought they were needed in Britain. • However, the public thought differently. This is when the CND came in to play.

  5. Case of Catch-up • Britain were behind in the development of nuclear submarines. • USA- USS Nautilus • Launched 21st January 1954 • USSR- Project 627 • Commissioned 12th March 1959

  6. Britain’s First Nuclear Submarine • HMS Dreadnought, launched 21st October 1960. • In order to make her nuclear powered Britain had to use American Technology. • This agreement was reached in December 1958 allowing the build to go ahead. • Taken out of service 1980.

  7. Valient Class • The Valient class was the first fleet of ‘all Brtish’ nuclear submarines. • There were two in the class. • Valient • Warspite • They entered service between July 1966 and October 1971.

  8. Swiftsure Class • Launched in 1973. • Faster, quieter and deeper diving than there predecessors. • Six in the class: • Swiftsure • Sovereign • Superb • Sceptre • Spartan • Splendid

  9. Costs • Nuclear submarines came at a huge cost. • HMS Dreadnought had estimated costs of £18,500,000.

  10. British Nuclear Submarine Base- Faslane • Established over 40 years ago. • Faslane was a 1000 acre site on the loch Long in Argyll that the British Navy took over. • 6500 military and civilian staff were employed making it Scotland’s biggest single site employer.
