  1. Dangers of Driving Dangers of Driving with with Cocaine in System Cocaine in System Beth Freeman, 54, was called as selfish and cold by the wife of late William Mathews, 47, the Wayzata police officer who was crushed to death by the former in September 2017. Freeman, who was sentenced to 98 months in prison earlier in May 2018, had rammed her vehicle into Mathews, who was reportedly clearing the debris off the highway. Freeman admitted to negligence and rash driving. Ironically, she had used cocaine a couple of days before the accident and the drug was still in her system when she ran over the police officer. Earlier, in November 2017, she was handed down a 17- month prison term for drug possession felony. A mother driving with her five kids was stopped at the US-Mexico border (Otay Mesa Port of Entry, San Diego) in April 2018 on the suspicion that she was carrying drugs in her minivan. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers found some discrepancies in the van and scanned it. They found out abnormalities in the spare tire, doors and the gas tank for the ostensible purpose of hiding something. On digging further, they unearthed a haul of methamphetamine, heroin and cocaine concealed in 2016 packets. The drugs were valued at around $1 million. She was taken into custody. Offenses like this, where children are used in drug smuggling, cause a considerable harm to their psyche. According to Pete Flores, CBP’s director field operations, the hardest to tackle drug smuggling instances are ones where adults involve their kids. Earlier in May 2018, 62-year old Steve Cassidy, former president of the Uniformed Firefighters Association and currently in charge of FDNY’s pension fund, was arrested after he crashed his government car into a dumpster in Midtown, Manhattan. He narrowly avoided hitting the pedestrians. Cassidy was reportedly driving under the influence (DUI); had watery, bloodshot eyes and could speak difficultly. He was also carrying an envelope containing cocaine. He was charged on two counts – DUI and possessing controlled substance. www.sovarizona.com

  2. Driving under the influence of cocaine or any other drug or alcohol is very risky. It not only endangers the life of the individual, but also of those around. Individuals who abuse cocaine regularly, or are withdrawing from the drug find their ability to drive motor vehicles impaired significantly. Behind the wheel in that state, they don’t only risk their own lives but may also claim innocent lives. Moreover, as they could be going through a cocaine comedown, they could feel fatigued and tired and lack attentiveness because of it. In either case, they are liable to make faulty decisions, and cause damage. Ignoring the risks, many people drive with drugs in their system. This is apparent from the fact that every day someone is caught speeding, or engaging in other negligent driving practices with significant amount of substance – alcohol, methadone, cocaine, marijuana or weed – in their system at the time of the incident. Though incoherent and lacking the ability to explain the basics, they manage to hold on to the belief that they are capable of driving. Consequences of cocaine use Apart from the increased risk of accidents, cocaine is associated with several other hazards. A powerful stimulant, it increases pulse rate and constricts the blood vessels so that the individual is at increased risk of blood pressure, heart attacks and strokes. The impact could be so powerful that even a young person with a sound heart could be admitted for emergency.
