What is Obesity? • Obesity means having too much body fat. • It is different from being overweight, which means weighing too much. • Both terms mean that a person's weight is greater than what's considered healthy for his or her height, however, a person is considered obese when his or her weight is 20% or more above normal weight

  4. How is it detected? The most common measure of obesity is the body mass index or BMI. A person is considered overweight if his or her BMI is between 25 and 29.9; a person is considered obese if his or her BMI is over 30.

  5. Symptoms • Gluttonous appetite • Weight gain • Diabetes • High blood pressure • Low self esteem • Heart attack • Stroke • Depression • High cholesterol • Sleep apnea

  6. Long Term Effects • Cardiovascular Disease • Hypertension • Sleep Apnea • Stroke • Type 2 Diabetes • Osteoarthritis • Increase Risk for Unborn Babies

  7. Gender & Cultural Variations • Predominant in woman • More prevalent in African Americans than Whites • Increases in age • Seen most in Middle-aged Adults • U.S. is the world’s leader in percentage of obese people

  8. Treatment • Exercise Therapy • Dietary Therapy • Behavioral Therapy • Medication/ Supplemental Therapy • Surgery
