C. The Balkan Peninsula • An area in southeastern Europe • Before WWI, Austria-Hungary took over Bosnia • Serbia was independent • Serbians wanted to unite Bosnia and Serbia into one Slavic state= Ethnic Tension & Nationalism!
D. The “Powder Keg of Europe!” • A powder keg is a barrel of gunpowder • Very explosive! • Ethnic tension, racism, & nationalism = Balkan peninsula ready to explode! (metaphor for people revolting)
Europe is on the brink of War!!! Because of tensions in the Balkan Peninsula and the fear that France might attack Germany to get its land back… European countries go looking for allies
Group Activity With your group you must decide what allies are best for your country’s safety and stability Step 1: Look at the map to locate your country. Next read the information about your country to discover what M.A.I.N. reason you need to find allies. List that under #1 Step 2: Underline in the paragraph what your country needs or wants specifically and list it on your worksheet
Step 3: Look at your map and read about the other countries to find out who you want to be your ally- list the countries and the reasons in the box under #3 Step 4: Get out a separate piece of paper and create a short treaty (contract) that your allies must sign Ie: “The country of _________ promises to defend the country of ___________ if attacked by an enemy” Step 5: Go get your allies!
