Delaware Legislation It is the intent and purpose of the General Assembly through this subchapter (http://delcode.delaware.gov/title14/c034/sc03/index.shtml#TopOfPage) to enable and encourage academically talented Delawareans to pursue careers in specific fields identified as areas of need and to encourage students to practice their profession in Delaware.

Maine Access to Medical Education Program Provides preferred access to medical school for 20 Maine students entering participating medical schools each year. • FAME pays $5,000 seat fee per student • Fee covers program administrative costs of the participating medical school • Allopathic • 10 University of Vermont College of Medicine • 5 Dartmouth Medical School • Osteopathic • 5 University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine

  9. Maine Access to Medical Education Program Program Intent • Legislation: • Maximize educational opportunities available to Maine residents • Increase number of primary care physicians practicing in medically underserved areas in Maine

  10. Maine Health Professions Loan Program • Need-based, forgivable loans • No interest while in school, professional training, or obligated service • Must file a FAFSA. Parent expected family contribution (EFC) is considered for students under 30 years of age. • Eligible students • Maine residents • MD, DO, dentistry, optometry and veterinary medicine

  14. Maine Dental Education Loan and Loan Repayment Program Program intent • To increase access to dental care for underserved populations in Maine How? • By providing forgivable dental student loans and/or loan repayment for dental service providers

  15. Maine Dental Education Loan and Loan Repayment Programs • Up to $20,000 per year for 4 years • Aggregate maximum of $80,000

Maine Dental Education Loan and Loan Repayment Programs Loan repayment: • Both graduate and undergraduate education loan debt are eligible for repayment • Two year agreement term which is renewable for additional two years • $20,000 for each year of service for up to 4 years • Aggregate maximum of $80,000

Educators for Maine Program Eligibility Requirements: • Graduating high school seniors, students accepted into undergraduate college programs, and students accepted into post-baccalaureate programs who are residents of Maine and who are pursuing initial certification as a teacher, including speech pathology, or a career in child development are eligible to apply. • Applicants must have a most recent cumulative grade point average of a 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. • Applicants must provide a complete application to FAME postmarked on or before May 1st each year.

Educators for Maine Program Repayment: • Once a borrower completes their education and attains certification or childcare provider qualifications, the borrower may have their loan forgiven. • One year’s worth of loan will be forgiven for each year of return service in which the borrower is a full-time educator, speech pathologist, or child care provider in an eligible Maine school or child care center.

Educators for Maine Program Repayment – cont. • Two years’ worth of the loan will be forgiven for each year that the borrower is working as a full-time educator of a designated underserved subject area in an eligible Maine school. • Borrowers who do not become an educator in an eligible Maine school or child care facility, must repay the loan to FAME with interest. Currently, the interest rate is equal to the Federal Stafford Loan repayment interest rate plus .75%, determined at the time of selection as an Educators for Maine Program recipient.

Indiana Minority Teacher Scholarship • The Minority Teacher Scholarship was created by the 1988 Indiana General Assembly to address the critical shortage of Black and Hispanic teachers in Indiana. • In 1990 the Indiana General Assembly amended the Minority program to include the field of Special Education, and in 1991 the fields of Occupational and Physical Therapy were added.

Indiana Minority Teacher Scholarship Eligibility • A minority student (defined as Black or Hispanic) seeking a teaching certification; or • A student seeking a Special Education teaching certification; orA student seeking an Occupational or Physical Therapy certification. • An Indiana resident and an US Citizen. • Admitted to an eligible institution as a full time student or already attending as a full time student. • Pursuing or intend to pursue a course of study that would enable the student upon graduation to teach in an accredited elementary or secondary school in Indiana. • Complete and file the FAFSA. • Not be in default on a State or Federally-funded Student loan. • If already enrolled in college, have a Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 2.0 on a scale of 4.0

  27. Indiana Minority Teacher Scholarship Procedures • Collegesmake the awards. • Need may be considered but it is not a requirement to apply. • Preference is given to minority students and first time college students • Scholarships are non-transferable between universities.

Indiana Minority Teacher ScholarshipRenewal Scholarships • Renewal ScholarshipsScholars must: • Maintain the cumulative minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 2.0 on a scale of 4.0 or the equivalent, or meet the minimum GPA requirements established at the college for its school of education, if it is higher. • Reapply each year.

Indiana Minority Teacher ScholarshipScholarship Value • Scholarship Value The maximum annual scholarship is $1,000 or$4,000 if a minority student applicant shows need • Colleges will determine the actual amount when reviewing a scholar's financial aid package. Colleges may not reduce a scholar's state or federal gift (free) financial aid, if any, when awarding the scholarship. The scholarship amount will be divided into semester or quarterly disbursements, the same as other financial aid.

Indiana Minority Teacher Scholarship Conditions • Scholars must agree to: • Pursuea program which leads to either a teaching orOccupational or Physical Therapy Certification. • Complete the Teacher or Occupational or Physical Therapy certification program within six (6) years from the time the first scholarship is received. • Teach full time in an accredited Indiana elementary or secondary school; or • Practicein the field of Occupational or Physical Therapy in an accredited school, vocational rehabilitation center, community mental retardation or other developmental disabilities center, for 3 years out of the first 5 years after certification.

INDIANA NURSING SCHOLARSHIP Purpose • Created in 1990 to encourage and promote qualified individuals to pursue a nursingcareer in Indiana. • The program is administered by the State Student Assistance Commission of Indiana (SSACI) which is responsible for recordkeeping and for allotting funds to approved colleges and universities.

NDIANA NURSING SCHOLARSHIP Eligibility • Be admitted to an approved institution of higher learning as a full time (12 hours or more) or part time (6-11 hours) nursingstudent. • Be an Indiana resident and an US citizen. • Agree in writing to work as a nurse in an Indiana health care setting for at least the first two (2) years following graduation. • Demonstrate a financial need for the scholarship. • Have a minimum GPA of at least 2.0 on a scale of 4.0 or the equivalent, or meet the minimum GPA requirements established for the college's nursing program if it is higher. • Not be in default on a student loan. • Complete and file the FAFSA.

  33. INDIANA NURSING SCHOLARSHIP Renewal Scholarships To receive a renewal award, Scholars must: • Maintain the cumulative GPArequired by the college for admission to its nursing program, or • Maintain a2.0 GPA on a scale of 4.0 or the equivalent if there is no minimum at the college.

  34. INDIANA NURSING SCHOLARSHIP Scholarship Value • The maximum annual award is $5,000. • However, the actual amount of the scholarship is affected by the amount of other tuition specific aid - grants and scholarships received by an applicant.

INDIANA NURSING SCHOLARSHIP Conditions Scholars must agree to: • Work as a nurse in an Indiana health care setting for at least the first two (2) years following graduation • Complete the nursing program within six (6) years from the time the first scholarship is received • REPAY funds received (with interest) if they fail to fulfill the terms of their scholarship agreement may be required
