Location • Make sure the location has the following attributes: • Sunlight • Shade • Water • Air
Raised Bed Gardens • Typically made of wood and about 12” in height • Convenient for watering and harvesting • Easier to have a good quality mix of soil • Less soil compaction • Can be set up on any surface • Can be built to be handicap accessible
Flat Bed Gardens • Traditional garden • Has 2’ gap to make harvesting and watering easy • Consumes a lot of space
Containers • Easy to make, manage and add beauty to any area • Must have holes in bottom of container to allow for water drainage • Take up a small space • Examples: • Whiskey Barrels • Baskets • Washtubs • Wooden Crates
Rooftop • Good use of wasted/unused space • EXPENSIVE to establish • Must check local ordinances • Should get an architect to help • Should have windbreaks • Consider ease of watering and accessibility to roof-top
Vertical Gardening • Saves valuable garden space • Have a tendency to be shadowed by building, check sun’s movement before planting • Examples: • Trellis • Cages • Teepees • String poles • Arbors

Maintain your Garden Section 5
Maintaining your Garden • Stake plants as needed in the garden. • Control pests • Keeping your garden clean of debris and dead plants. • Check for pest problems and practice non chemical methods to control pests. • Harvest plants as they mature. • Do not let plants over ripen or decay on the plant as this will lead to pest issues.
