SAFE AND ACTIVE SCHOOLDAY • Plan of evaluation and modelling: • 1) School cultures in Turku and Tallinn: analyzing and comparing school-lives in the two cities: • The aim of this study is to find the similarities and differences between school cultures of Turku and Tallinn. An important question is, how the norms, values and ways of action in school support the aims and values of SAS project. The study has two phases: • Phase 1: to compare the explicit values and norms of school world by document analysis of national and municipal curricula. • Phase 2: to see how the explicit norms and values are related to the actual school life. Method: a survey study or a (focus group) interview study (or a combination of these) for school personnel.
SAFE AND ACTIVE SCHOOLDAY • 2) Active and safe life as pupils’ experience: • This study is concentrated on the well-being of school-aged children in the context of school community. Turku and Tallinn groups have many shared interests about pupils’ well-being, and all relevant results will be compared with each other. In both Turku and Tallinn, we are collecting data from pupils aged 11-12 and 13-15 by survey and by qualitative essays. Our common interests are: • Activeness of the lifestyle • Pedagogical well-being (class and school atmosphere, social relations, participating in common things at school, being able to influence) • Student - teacher relations • Social and emotional well-being (safety, social competence, self-esteem, loneliness) • Break times and their connections with physical and social activity, safety and well-being
SAFE AND ACTIVE SCHOOLDAY • 3) The effects of SAS project in the school cultures of Turku and Tallinn: • The main purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of SAS project in schools. The evaluation is continuous; information will be produced to support the development of SAS project. In the final evaluation report, changes in the school cultures in Turku and Tallinn will be analyzed and best practices will be collected and reported. The data will be collected from the teachers and principals of the schools that participate SAS project.
