The Ring of Fire A Gift Grant Project for the year 2000-2001
The Ring of Fire Project • Combined • Math • Science • Technology
Earth & ocean basins Ocean bottom topography Earth’s moving plates Properties of waves Introduction to geometry Coordinates, graphs & negative integers Ratio, proportion & percent Linear relationships We met and took a look at our curriculums
What technology were we looking at? • We knew we needed • Computers • Programs • Floppy drives • Printers • We didn’t know we wanted • Digital movie camera • Scanner • Program uniformity
Computers • Computers and related hardware were • IMAC and IMAC DV • 2 Donated PCs • Imation floppy drives • Epson 740 printers
Software • Programs • 3D software for earthquake data • MS Office 2001 for word program, Powerpoint™ and Excel ™
We didn’t know we wanted • Digital movie camera: Sony Digital 8-DCP-TRV 120 • This we discovered after talking to fellow GIFT grant fellows. • A scanner • Need did not surface until recently
The Teaching Part • Tech training • Students had to be Internet trained • Students had to become users of • Browsers • Search engines • Spreadsheets • Presentation programs • Word programs
Students had to be Internet trained • Done in science • Larger room, more computers • Teacher with greater experience • If our school did it in sixth grade we could have skipped this training • All students are to be trained [State] before going on the Internet • It just makes sense that they be familiar with the environment.
Further Student Technology Training • Students had to learn to use • Browsers • Search engines • Spreadsheets • Presentation programs • Word programs
Students had to learn to use • Browsers • Netscape 4.5 / 4.7 • This was installed using a CD on old PowerMac and PCs • Internet Explorer 4.5 • Came already installed on the IMACs • We wanted to use both to be sure students became comfortable with both
Students had to learn to use • Search engines • We were to collect earthquake data and research volcanoes and plate tectonics • Students were given a Powerpoint presentation on the use of search engines • Students were given an assignment and the task of assessing their own skill
Students had to learn to use • Search engines • They used various search engines • They looked at bookmarked sites about searching • http://www.gis.net/~peacewp/sear.htm • http://nuevaschool.org/~debbie/library/research/adviceengine.html • They made searches changing wording • They assessed their searching skills
Students had to learn to use • Spreadsheets • Typically left until year’s end • This year we had to collect earthquake data • We started with Claris, Appleworks and Excel • It was too much for me • It was too confusing for students • We now use Excel for earthquake data • Students will expand to creating data tables
Students had to learn to use • Presentation programs • Again we started out with Claris, Appleworks, and Powerpoint • It was alright with the teacher • Students all wanted to use the Powerpoint • Students presented right away • They love this multimedia stuff so it was an easy sell • They were introduced to presentation assessing
Students had to learn to use • Word programs • Again using several programs was too time consuming and most students had word at home • This was used to • Show them copying and pasting from the net • How to create simple tables • How to create good looking research reports
Three Dimensional Software • This program is supposed to allow students • To input data: longitude, latitude and depth of epicenter. • This should make a 3D image • Students are looking to see if it resembles what scientists claim is the edge of the Pacific Plate. • I do not know how to work this software • It should have been ordered earlier • Be sure you work with a company that will ship and then bill
Where’s the Math and Science? • It was woven in throughout the year • Via projects that were planned last summer • Via meetings of teachers involved to find out where they were going with curriculum • Via team meetings where social studies and English got involved as well

Questions? • Thanks and good luck with whatever you are doing or planning. • Think big I started this project two years ago after listening to a speaker at this very conference. • If I can be of help, I am at diane@maui.net Aloha
