  1. Dye Lab Molecular Movement

  2. Dye Lab Demonstration Step 1: Obtain a beaker full of hot water and cold water. Step 2: Let the water settle so that water is still. Step 3: Use the dropper to add 1 drop of dye into the hot water. Step 4: Draw a picture of your observations and write down 3 detailed observations in your notebook. (pg 47R) Step 5: Use the dropper to add 1 drop of dye into the cold water. Step 6:Draw a picture of your observations and write down 3 detailed observations in your notebook. (pg 47R)

  3. Initial Molecular Model Complete the initial model page 47R. draw a model of what you think is happening with the molecules inside each beaker of water. Models always include: • Drawings • Labels • Description

  4. Watch this maybe it will help. Which one looks like it is showing the molecules moving faster?

  5. Group Model Create a model of what you think is happening with the molecules inside each beaker of water. Models always include: • Drawings • Labels • Description

  6. Matter Vs Energy Do you know the difference?

  7. What is Matter?

  8. What is Energy?

  9. Energy or Matter Sort the cards into two categories: • Energy • Matter

  10. Matter - Anything that takes up space.

  11. Energy- what makes matter move or change. Ability to do work.

  12. There are different types of energy. Add the following energy types to your Glossary. Potential energy Kinetic Energy Chemical Energy Thermal Energy

  13. Brain pop video We will show this video 3 times. • First time watch the video • 2nd time write the definition of each word • 3rd time refine your definitions as needed

  14. Potential energy - stored energy Kinetic energy- energy of motion Chemical energy - stored in food used to move. Thermal energy - vibrating atoms cause heat.

  15. Which type(s) of energy were involved in the dye lab? Brainstorm with your group!

  16. Matter and Energy When molecules (MATTER) gain energy they move faster (KINETIC ENERGY) and create more heat (THERMAL ENERGY). • The faster the molecules move the hotter they are!

  17. Less Kinetic energy (moves slower) Less Thermal energy (lower temperature) More Kinetic energy (moves faster) More Thermal energy (higher temperature)

  18. Group Model Add the words Kinetic Energy and ThermalEnergy to your group model. Models always include: • Drawings • Labels • Description

  19. Energy or Matter Check your cards. Do you need to move some items. Re-sort the cards into two categories: • Energy • Matter

  20. Final Molecular Model/CER 47L Create a model of what you think is happening with the molecules inside each beaker of water. Complete the CER *use evidence from the dye lab *reasoning use both Kinetic and Thermal energy Models always include: • Drawings • Labels • Description

  21. Group brainstorm What types of energy are involved in the process of the car changing temperature? (Refer to vocabulary chart) Why do you think so?

  22. My creative representation of Kinetic and thermal Energy! Pg. 50L Draw a picture that represents the movement of particles (kinetic energy) and the average temperature (thermal energy) as it increases. Be creative do not just draw the image on 50R. Give it character and life. Show the kinetic energy and thermal energy relating it to real life. Remember to include: Movement and Temperature!

  23. Heat Transfer • Is the transfer of thermal energy from a hotter object to a cooler one until both objects are the same temperature. (You can not transfer cold or give someone cold)
