  3. Invasive Species​ • ​means non-native or not originally from that place • ​causes problems in the non-native environment​

  4. Characteristics of Invaders​ • ​reproduce very quickly • ​lack of predators = lack of population control • ​adapts well to new environments • ​can live off of a wide variety of food sources

  5. Emerald Ash Borer​ • ​accident • ​thought to be brought to North America by traveling in ship containers • originally from Asia • ​can now be found in 15 states and Canada • has killed ​50-100 million ash trees • ​one of the most destructive invasive insects in North America

  7. European Starling​ • ​on purpose • ​Shakespeare mentioned this bird in his writing so in 1890 100 birds were released in Central Park in NYC  • ​originally from Eurasia • now can be found all over U.S. • ​destroy crops • rob native birds of nesting sites

What next?​ • Mechanical-prescribed fire, manual removal, explosives • Biological-natural enemies such as insects or pathogens that attack the invasive species • Chemical-manipulation of water or soil chemistry to increase the growth of native species • Cultural-educating people, encouraging actions that minimize the spread of invasive species
