Emerald Ash Borer • accident • thought to be brought to North America by traveling in ship containers • originally from Asia • can now be found in 15 states and Canada • has killed 50-100 million ash trees • one of the most destructive invasive insects in North America
European Starling • on purpose • Shakespeare mentioned this bird in his writing so in 1890 100 birds were released in Central Park in NYC • originally from Eurasia • now can be found all over U.S. • destroy crops • rob native birds of nesting sites
What next? • Mechanical-prescribed fire, manual removal, explosives • Biological-natural enemies such as insects or pathogens that attack the invasive species • Chemical-manipulation of water or soil chemistry to increase the growth of native species • Cultural-educating people, encouraging actions that minimize the spread of invasive species
