  2. Steering Committee • Members for 2004-2005: Henrik Breuning-Madsen, Winfried Blum; Josef Kozak; Pandi Zdruli; Jaume Boixedera; Erika Micheli; Eric Van Ranst, Mark Kibblewhite (Chairman) and Luca Montaranella (Secretariat) Calendar • The SC met in Ispra 18 March and in Brussels 28 April

  3. WG mandates • a Soil Information WG will support a work programme led by the EEA, which will address the rationale, basic requirements and infrastructure for soil information • a Digital Soil Function Mapping WG will support a work programme led by the JRC which will develop a technical specification and capacity for digital maps

  4. Soil information WG 2005 • DGENV requested ESBN to support the delivery by JRC of proposals for “Common criteria for defining risk areas in relation to soil threats • SC requested Wolf Eckelmann to form a “task and finish” group to prepare material for JRC. • The information was delivered as requested.

  5. Soil information WG 2006 • Proposed to re-form WG • as joint WG with EEA • with new mandate towards definition of future soil information requirements

  6. Digital Soil Function WG • The exact mandate of the group (which has met successfully) needs to be clearer, and may need separate work streams for • Updating 1:1,000,000 soil map • Digital soil information • Soil Function information

  7. FP6 proposal • The call on “Common criteria and indicators for characterisation of soils” It was proposed that a core group of 3 to 4 members should lead the proposal which should include as many ESBN members in a supporting role. • ENVASSO proposal was successful and project will start in February 2006

  8. FP7 proposals • ESBN members should consider possible projects, relating to the summary published by ECSSS. • This is now urgent.

  9. Forest Monitoring Network • It was noted that there is an opportunity for ESBN to advise on the possible extension of this monitoring network to non-forest soils. • No action taken so far

  10. JRC work programme • Extension of meta-data base of the European Archive of Digital Soil Maps • Soil Atlas of Europe – Success! • GMES monitoring changes in soil organic matter • Testing the INSPIRE principles (e.g. within ALPSIS, FOREST FOCUS and LUCAS • Soil Information system of the Danube river basin • Harmonisation procedures and analytical capacities • Integration of environmental aspects in the agricultural policy

  11. EuroGeoSurveys (EGS) • Meeting held in Brussels in April 2005 • Revision of contract with JRC recommended to ensure that ESBN is recognised as advisor for soil information

  12. Reflection #1 • Soil information is ageing and still not completely available

  13. Reflection #2 • ESBN anticipates more requests for information and advice • ESBN should not be only responsive • It is a time for a full time secretariat to: • Act as technical editor • Support peer reviewing process • Manage project work

  14. Reflection #3 • The development of digital technology is rapid • ESBN must adopt and stay at forefront of application of new technology to: • Gather new primary data • Deliver better and more accessible information
