  2. Persian Wars • Fought between which countries? • How did it start? • How did it end? • What were the longer term effects?

  3. Persian Wars • Fought between which countries? Persia v. Greece (esp. Sparta and Athens) • How did it start? Athens provoked Persians by supporting Ionian rebellion. Also “earth and water” • How did it end? Greece won- esp. Athens. • What were the longer term effects? • Greece remains independent, confident. • Athens continues experimenting in government and culture. • Athens becomes more powerful and builds Delian League.

  4. Persian Wars- How can I remember you? • For starters, its name- fought between the Persians (and the Greeks) • Also, it is the only one of two sets of wars we really discussed related to Greece (unless you count Troy).

  6. Peloponnesian Wars • Fought between which countries? Sparta and its allies (Peloponnesian League) and Athens and its allies (Delian League) • How did it start? Athens became most powerful city after Persian Wars; Sparta worried about Athens’ power • How did it end? Sparta won • What were the longer term effects? • Much of Greece politically, militarily, and economically weak. • Left open to invasion from Philip II (Macedonians)

Peloponnesian Wars- How can I remember you? • For starters, its name- fought between the Peloponnesians (Sparta and allies) and the Athenians and allies. • Also, it is the only one of two sets of wars we really discussed related to Greece (unless you count Troy). • How can I remember that Sparta won? Well its called Peloponnesian Wars- they won, so its named after them.

Rome won • What were the longer term effects? • Rome gains an empire- at first in Western Mediterranean, then in Eastern Med. • Carthage destroyed

  10. Punic Wars- How can I remember you? • For starters, its name- fought between the Carthaginians (Carthage was a Phoenician colony and Punic is Latin name for Phoenicians) • Also, Punic sounds like Punish- which is what Rome does to Carthage (by burning the city and “salting the earth”)
