  1. Lord Of The FliesChapter 9 Janelyn S. De Venecia

  2. Summary • Simon gained his consciousness beside the rotting pigs head on the stick, he talked to it but it didn't’t reply. • He walked away from it through the woods and got to the mountain • He saw the figure, or “the beast” resting on top, he hid and then saw it’s face. • He discovered that it is a dead man in a parachute and the winds are making him move. • He threw up because the body was stinking so bad. • He ran to tell the others about the dead paratrooper but since he was so weak he staggered and couldn’t run.

  3. Since it was really hot, Ralph decided to take a swim at the pool and Piggy joined in too. They were chatting and Piggy said he wanted to go home. • Ralph looked around and saw no biguns so he asked Piggy. Piggy said they went to Jack’s party. Both of them felt jealous so they decided to go and “check it out”. • At the party, everyone was having fun and eating. They saw Jack seating like a king on the log with painted face and lots of food in front of him. He was ordering people around. • Jack saw them and there was a tension once again. The tension disappeared and everyone were united again with laughter when Piggy screamed and danced because he got burnt by the meat the 2 boys were holding. • Jack offered Piggy and Ralph food and then he asked if everyone’s done.

  4. Jack was asking who wanted to join his group, when Ralph tried to step in, Jack embarrassed Ralph by saying you were eating too. • Ralph and Jack argued for the power again. Ralph said he has the conch but the conch is powerless now. Jack told them about hunting meat and protecting them from the beast. Ralph looked around and saw that the boys are on Jack’s side. • It rained and Ralph tried to convince them back again by using the shelter but then Jack found a way to distract them again. They danced their “kill the beast” ritual Roger played as “the beast” Ralph and Piggy couldn’t help but join in. • The game started to become more serious and Roger stopped to being a pig and join them going at the empty circle and the littlun started making their own circle too. • The boys got carried away and when Simon came to tell them the news, everyone just wanted to kill, so they saw him as the beast. Everyone circled around him and just killed him. • Meanwhile, the wind carried the paratrooper’s body towards the sea. • Evening came and the tide carried Simon’s dead body towards the open sea 

  5. Symbolic meaning • Simon- A hunter, another biguns in the group. Helps everyone and caring. In this chapter he was represented as “the beast” by all the kids. They killed him. He represents the start of the kids’ savageness. • The Conch- Used to make a loud sound by blowing it.In previous chapters, it symbolized as power, in this chapter, it’s powerless and symbolized as Ralph being powerless too. • The Roasted Pig- It is eaten especially in feast. It symbolizes Jack’s power. Once they eat it, they accept Jack as a leader. (that’s how Jack sees it at least) • Painted Face- It is used, especially by soldiers, to hide themselves during war. It symbolizes the wildness the kids are becoming. Jack feels like he’s a tribe when he’s face is painted.

  6. Vocabulary • Tremulous- shaking or quivering slightly • Steadfast- resolutely or dutifully firm and unwavering • Gesticulate- Use Gestures, especially dramatic ones, instead of speaking or to emphasize one’s word. • Twitch- a short, sudden jerking or convulsive movement • Stifle- Suffocate

  7. Vocabulary Questions • Which of these would make you tremulous- snakes, spiders, or scorpions? Snakes and Scorpions would make me tremulous, just thinking about them gives me goose bumps. 2. Who is your most steadfast friend? What is this person’s best quality? Tien is my most steadfast friend. Her best quality is she doesn’t give up with work easily and usually finishes what she’s supposed to.

  8. Who among your teachers gesticulates the most when speaking? Mr. Barrios gesticulates the most. Every time he speaks, he moves his arms. • Unscramble the word that is an effective antonym for “stifle.” Facilitate • Aside from a nervous twitch, what are some other physical indications that someone may be lying? Shaky voice, eyes moving all around the place, can’t look straight into the person he’s talking to and stuttering can be some of other physical indications that someone’s lying.

  9. Think Questions • What do you think happened to the boys in the Island when they saw Simon as the beast? • What do you think the boys will do after they realize that it was Simon they just killed. What would you do if you were a part of it?

  10. What could “the beast” be in this chapter? • In this chapter, the beast could be the monsters inside them that pushes them to be savages and do horrible things, their urge to be wild, powerful, the fun feeling of their adrenaline whenever they do something “exciting”.
