Welcome to Fifth Grade!

Welcome to Mrs. Faisetty's 5th grade classroom! Through various methods, I am learning the strengths and needs of my students. We focus on language arts, spelling, writing, guided reading, math, social studies, and science. Students also have the opportunity to participate in specialists' classes and WIN time. Homework is given four days a week. Join us for an exciting year of learning!

  1. Welcome to Fifth Grade! Mrs. Faisetty Room 56

  2. My Background • Graduate of Bloomsburg University with a dual certification in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education with a Language Arts concentration • Masters of Education degree from Kutztown University • Certified as an English Language Learner instructor from Kutztown University

  3. Beginning 5th Grade! • Varying student levels • I’m learning the students strengths and needs through various methods (pretests, surveys, small in class assignments) • Children are learning the new routines through guided independence.

  4. Classroom Management • I consider myself a role model. • Student and I discussed and created rules • School Behavior Management –prizes from Mrs. Ringer • “Caught “Beeing” Good” • Whole Class * “Spotted Being Good” * The class earns puff balls to earn class rewards * Donations – If you have any items at home that you would like to donate to our prize bin, please send them in • Individual – class contract * Rewards: Prizes, notes/calls home, positive postcards * Consequences: Warnings, time out, and note/call home

Language Arts • StoryWorks magazine is one of our various resources * Integrates reading, writing, spelling, and English * Emphasis on reading strategies – fluency & comprehension and digging deeper • I also use trade books, articles, non-fiction text • Guided reading – Small group time with a teacher, student leveled books * Meet during Daily 5 time Tests –dates will be noted in children’s assignment books

Spelling • Words patterns selected from the East penn spelling curriculum • Words distributed a week prior to the spelling test • Each spelling test focuses on a given phonetic skill/spelling pattern. • Tests – dates will be noted in the children’s assignment book • Please encourage correct spelling in daily work.

  7. Writing • Writing process – We continue to use this process and will have continued practice throughout the school year. • Journals • Daily 5 – free writing & practice time • Writing projects – • Three forms explored: Narrative, Informational, and Opinion • Seasonal activities • Cross curricular activities (incorporating writing into Science and Social Studies)

  8. Guided Reading/ Daily “5” • Individual, partner & small group activities • Possible rotations with Mrs. Beky (later in the year) • A variety of workstations (rotational) - Guided Reading - Read to Self (silent reading) - Read to Someone (buddy reading) - Writing - Word Work - Technology and Listening

Math • HSP Harcourt Math series www.thinkcentral.com login: student5 password: reading • 30 chapters • District wide change: Students will remain in their homerooms for math instruction. • I will be pretesting and assessing students knowledge and understanding. • Small group reinforcement • 180 Days of Math – worksheets that review all math topics (more info. to follow)

  10. Social Studies • Taught by Mrs. Beky • Topics will include: - Geography - Explorers - Early settlements - Colonial times - American Revolution - A new nation - Citizenship PLUS…current events and more!

Science • Topics will include: - Scientific process (Our 1st topic!) - Solar System (Earth/Moon) (Astronomy) - Processes that change the Earth (Geology) (Meterology) - Systems & Interactions with Nature (Biomes) (Cycles in Nature) (Waste Management) • Hands on, when possible • Technology integration

WIN Time • Students are benchmarked screened 3 times per year. • Students may switch teachers (one way to provide greater instruction to your student’s needs) • Topics for WIN time include: • Reading fluency • Reading comprehension • Writing • Flexibility in groups, as teachers see necessary • Teachers will communicate student progress • Not a graded activity

  13. Handwriting and Computers • Handwriting - Zaner Bloser cursive - Review of cursive handwriting throughout the year. • Computers - Daily integration (Daily 5) - Practice math, spelling, language, and writing - Educational websites - Harcourt Online components & texts - Study Island

Specialists • Day 1 – Art with Mr. Shreck • Day 2 – Library with Mrs. Mang • Day 3 – Fitness & Health with Mr. Burrell * Health will be 6 lessons throughout the school year. • Day 4 – Music with Miss Super • Day 5 – Chorus with Miss Super (8 weeks/half a year) • Dec. 2nd – Winter Chorus Concert • May 4th – Spring Chorus Concert

Homework • Moderate amount – four days a week - usually math and language - at times science & social studies projects • Unwritten-Read nightly/practice math facts • Study guides for all subjects, as needed • Assignment books – student’s daily completion - sign on as needed basis • Binder - Keep @ home, bring back, keep until test - Please don’t empty things other then the Homework Folder – leave at home side ;children will empty at school • Homework Pass

Grading • Report cards - Letter grading A 92-100% B 84-91% C 74- 83% D 65-73% F 0-64% - Performance levels 4- Excellent, exceeds expectations 3- Good, meets expectations 2- Making progress 1- Experiencing difficulty N/A- Not assessed at this time • Tests come home as needed. Please review, sign, and return to school the following day.
