Welcome to Science 11/16 • How many different words can you write down using the letters of the word: BARTIZAN Winner Gets a Prize Bait brant aria riata tzar barn brat rain tarn Tzarina brain brit rani tiara bran anti rant train • 3rd Period- Get out Rock Layers Lab • Today’s Schedule • 1. Fossil Activity and Notes/Discussion
What is a fossil? A fossil is the remains or evidence of any creature or plant that once lived on the Earth. World's Largest Coprolite (Dino Doo) Found. Alberta, Canada - Canada has one more notable to hang on it's wall, the biggest tyrannosaurid turd in the world. And it is very well preserved at that. Scientists have been going googoo over how incredibly well preserved the 6.7 inch wide and 25.2 inch long dino dropping is. They've been able to identify dino muscle tissue and bone.
Fossil Activity • Objective: To identify the different types of fossils, how fossils form, where fossils are found, and what fossils tells us by conducting in depth research. • 1. You will work individually to research fossils. • To earn credit for this assignment you need to write 1 correct fact in the categories about fossils on the board. Initial your facts. • 3. While you are researching and recording your findings on the board complete the fossil chart. • 4. You will have about 15 minutes to do this.
Rocks and Fossils • What happens immediately when something dies? • Flesh & muscle decay leaving hard parts behind. Nasty By Nature: Maggot Eating Machines : Video : Discovery Channel • Sometimes these hard parts are buried with sediment and turn to rock/fossils
How Do Fossils Form? • Fossils can form in amber/tree sap.
How Do Fossils Form? • Mummification- bodies that die in extremely dry or cold environments can dry out or freeze before they can decay
How Do Fossils Form? • Fossils in tar- 1,000s of years ago there were pits of thick, sticky tar that trapped animals and preserved there remains • HowStuffWorks Videos "Prehistoric: Death by Tar Pit"
How Do Fossils Form? • Trace Fossils- any naturally preserved evidence of an animal’s activity • Tracks, burrows, and coprolites (dino-doo) • Greatest Discoveries: Laetoli Footprints : Video : Science Channel
What do fossils tell us? • FOX Broadcasting Company - Bones TV Show - Bones TV Series - Bones Episode Guide
What do fossils tell us? • Reveal changes in environments • Coral fossils have been found in Iowa/ • Iowa was once underwater • Fish fossils have been found on mountains. • Mountains were once the bottom of oceans
What do fossils tell us? • Reveal changes in life • Index fossils- reveal the age of rocks
Geologic Time Scale Dailymotion - Are fossils proof for Darwin's theory of evolution?, a video from firstsciencetv. darwin, evolution, intelligent-design, creation, atheism Geologic Time The Geologic Time Scale is a timeline of Earth’s 4.6 billion year old history made using evidence from fossils. It shows how life has changed on Earth.
Making a Geologic Time Scale Project • Objective: Reconstruct the Geologic Time Scale into a Geologic Timeline by placing events and fossils in the proper locations. • 1. Project Manager, Constructer, 2 Researchers • 2. Roll of paper, meter stick, scissors, glue • 3. You will need to work together to complete this project. • 4. The tentative due date is by the end of class tomorrow. • 5. Do your best. Be neat. Ask Questions
