  13. Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park History: • Set aside in the early 1920’s by the state of California and the Save-the-Redwoods League, Prairie Creek State Park is a sanctuary of old growth coast redwood. • Along with Del Norte Coast, Jedediah Smith, and Redwood National Park, these parks make up 45 percent of all the old-growth redwood forest remaining in California. • Orick, CA. • 695 miles from Los Angeles. • About 10 hours and 47 minutes drive. • Enrance Fee: $12 / car Slide-1

  14. Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park Why it’s worth visiting: • “Fern Canyon” is awe-inspiring. Ferns smother the walls of the canyon. • Ferns are descendants of an ancient group of plants which were much more numerous 200 million years ago. Ferns are similar to flowering plants, but are considered to be a primitive form of plant life because they reproduce by spores, not seeds. • The canyon opens to Gold Bluffs Beach. • Prairie Creek offers camping, hiking, nature study, wildlife viewing, beach combing, picnicking, a visitor center with exhibits and a nature store.
