What Being In Christ Is All About Philippians 3:12-16
Where Is The Emphasis? Already Not Yet or A very different answer is given today
Historic Shift “Modern Christianity, in a dramatic reversal of its biblical form, promises to relieve the pain of living in a fallen world . . . the promise of bliss is for NOW!”
Where Does The New Testament Put The Emphasis? • 2 Corinthians 5:6-8 • Absent from the body, present with the Lord • 2 Timothy 4:8 • Crown of righteousness • Loved His appearing • Philippians 3:12-13 • Not yet attained • Not yet perfected • Not yet apprehended
Today’s Emphasis Is A Misplaced Emphasis • From heaven to happiness now • Are we guilty? • Is it a case of misunderstanding the gospel? • If so, do we then misrepresent it to others?
We Tend To Go To Extremes The Goal is Impossible We’ve already arrived The Goal of Christianity Complacency Discouragement Either will impede Progress
The Mistakes Of…Discouragement • Expect too much growth right now • Expect too much happiness right now • Consider 1 Peter 5:10
The Mistakes Of…Complacency • Get too comfortable here • Think we’re farther along than we really are • Consider 2 Peter 1:10-11
What About The Problems In Life? • In this body we groan (2 Cor. 5:1-2; Rom. 8:22) • The more we groan, the better (2 Cor. 12:7-10) • The more there is the better because it will make us long even more for heaven (Job 19:25-27) • Consider Jacob in Genesis 29:20
The Main Thing • Keep the main thing the main thing (1 Peter 1:13) • We are works in progress • In this world our fellowship with God is incomplete • To be found in Christ at the resurrection (Phil. 3:7-11) • The main goal we seek is still ahead (Heb. 4:1)
