  1. Basic Bible Christianity Lesson Nine God gathers his church

  2. Search the Scriptures • Study 1 Corinthians 11:17-34. • Instead of “communion” (common union) among the believers, what were there? • Divisions • Describe how the Corinthians were going about celebrating their meal. • Some were going ahead and getting drunk; others were left with nothing. • What purpose for Communion does Paul indicate in verse 26? • It is a proclamation of Christ’s death. Lesson 8 God works through Holy Communion

  3. Search the Scriptures • What are we eating and drinking in Communion? • Bread and wine, Christ’s body and blood • If we eat and drink unworthily, what are we sinning against? • Christ’s body and blood • What should we do before receiving Communion? • Examine ourselves Lesson 8 God works through Holy Communion

  4. Search the Scriptures • What consequence follows from unworthy eating and drinking? • Judgment (harm rather than good) • How may this judgment from God show itself? • Physical sickness • What is the purpose of God’s judgment? • Discipline to avoid condemnation Lesson 8 God works through Holy Communion

  5. True or false T F T T T F Holy Communion is a means through which God gives us forgiveness. A communicant (person who receives Communion) receives forgiveness in Communion by virtue of participating. We should examine ourselves before receiving Communion. People who are not one in faith should not receive Communion together, and it is hypocritical for them to do so. Only baptized Christians may receive Communion. People who cannot examine themselves may receive Communion only if the church allows. Lesson 8 God works through Holy Communion

  6. True or false T T T T The power in Holy Communion, as in Baptism, is in the words of Christ joined to the elements. Communion should be celebrated regularly and frequently, as a nourishing food for our faith. Although he cannot see into a person’s heart, a pastor serving Communion has the responsibility to try to avoid serving Communion to anyone who might receive it unworthily. A person who falls under God’s judgment by communing improperly or foolishly may repent of that sin and find forgiveness from God. Lesson 8 God works through Holy Communion

  7. Questions for discussion Describe the pros and cons of distributing the blood of Christ in a chalice, versus distributing it in individual cups. If you are sick or have to work, what should you do so that you still can receive Communion? Why do we have pastors consecrate the elements of Holy Communion and administer Holy Baptism in the name of the church? Lesson 8 God works through Holy Communion
