Explore states of matter in this prelab activity by drawing particles in different states—solid, liquid, and gas. Prepare for the lab report setup including purpose, materials, procedures, and data table/graph requirements.

States of Matter PrelabPage 88 • Draw three circles • First circle - draw what you think particles of a material would look like if it were in the solid state. • Second circle - draw the same particles in the liquid state. • Third circle - draw the same particles in the gas state. • Describe the difference between the three circles in a paragraph.
States of Matter Lab Lab Notes Setup – “Rough Draft” Page 89 • Title and name centered at top of page • Purpose/Hypothesis: Write your own purpose for this lab. • Materials/Apparatus: List vertically, bulleted. Identify variables and controls. Don’t forget drawing. Page 90 • Procedures: Numbered list. Don’t forget SAFETY or clean up!!! • SHOULD BE REPRODUCIBLE!!
Things to Consider During the Lab • Safety First! Be careful when using anything HOT!!! • What setting will you use for the hot plate? You may only use 7. • How often will you record the temperature? You may use no more than 1 minute increments. • How will you create a graph of your data? What are the two variables that you will put on the graph? • What information will you include in a conclusion? • Lab Report – States of Matter will be due November 18th (next Friday).

States of Matter Graph Setup • Type of Graph • Which type of graph do you want to use for this lab? • Independent Variable • What is it in this lab? • Which axis does it go on? • Dependent Variable • What is it in this lab? • Which axis does it go on?
