Stink Bug Movement, Sampling, Damage, and Controls - Lessons Learned in Recent Years

This study explores stink bug movement, sampling techniques, damage levels, and control measures in cotton fields. It compares different thresholds, sampling methods, and residual control under continuous stink bug reinfestation. The study also examines yield losses and cotton quality losses caused by stink bug damage.

  2. Regional Stink BugProjectThreshold StudyHeadland, Al 2005 Three Thresholds 1. Untreated 2. 20% Damage 3. Bug-Free (weekly sprays)

  3. Objective: To Correlate various stink bug numbers to boll damage levels. To compare drop cloth and boll crushing as sampling techniques. To measure control residual under a continuous stink bug reinfestation situation. To measure yield losses with different threshold levels. Document cotton quality losses from stink bug damage.

  4. Methods: Planted 8 rows of DPL-543 BGII/RR cotton through the middle of peanut field at Wiregrass Research and Extension Center, Headland Al. Three thresholds replicated from times in 90 ft. plots. Sampled 12 row foot by drop cloth and pulled 10 quarter size bolls per plot weekly from July 19( 3rd week of bloom) to Sept. 8. Harvested on October 21. Seed cotton samples sent to Tifton GA. for ginning and quality measurements.
