How to Make reading time effective First, Ask the student to predict what they think the book is about • Remind them there is no right or wrong answer • Explain that making predictions is like being a detective Finding clues Then, Help them look for Clues the author leaves for the reader • Look at the book title, illustrations on the front cover, pictures inside the book this skill provides students with… • a reason to read, improved comprehension, and help them to begin to develop a love for reading
Tools for success Preview • Before you tackle any reading, discuss what you see in the book, predictions, and any questions that the student may have about the book Read • Set realistic goals for how long and how many pages you’ll be able to read during the allotted time Recall • Have the student recall and recite the highlights of what was read • Have the student summarize the story in their own words
