We can put words in a special order called alphabetical order. • The first letter of the word is used to tell where the word would appear in ABC order.
Look at these words: Box Car Apple The word apple would come first in ABC order because A comes before B or C in the alphabet.

Put these words in ABC order Cat Ape Monkey Banana House 1. 2. 3. 4. 5
What about words that begin with the same letter? • If two words begin with the same letter, move to the second letter to see which comes first.

Let’s try this one: • Dog 1. • Duck 2. • Dirt 3. • Deck 4.
What about words that have the same first two letters? • If the words have the same two beginning letters, look at the third letter to determine which order to put the words in.
