The Battle of Guilford Court House • Nathanial Greene (Patriot) rested in Virginia • Returned to NC and set up defenses at Guilford Court County House • Waited • Cornwallis (Loyalist), in Hillsborough was 200 miles away from supply lines. • Lost a lot of men on rush across NC, no way to replace • Readied his army for battle • Marched to meet Greene

  3. March 15, 1781 • Cornwallis’s army arrived at the courthouse • Both sides shot artillery, Brits advanced to Continentals • Greene’s army shot soldiers, ran for the woods for cover and fired • Brits soon gained upper hand, late afternoon • Greene retreated

  4. Cornwallis gained victory, but lost a lot of men. • Some believed had the Brits lost it would have destroyed the British Army • (Point for Brits)

  5. The Tory War • Local loyalist were known as Tories • David Fanning (Popular Loyalist) fought Patriots • Captured several dozen • Including Governor Thomas Burke • Marched them to Wilmington and gave them to the Brits • Burke escaped • (Point for Brits)

  6. Surrender at Yorktown • Cornwallis ordered to Virginia to win • Washington and French Allies were waiting • Blocked Chesapeake Bay to cut Cornwallis off from British Fleet • Large force of French and Patriots drove Cornwallis to Yorktown, VA

  7. Nowhere to go, no help • Surrendered to George Washington • (Point for Patriots)

  8. Independence • Brits were causing more trouble with war than fixing it • Loosing funding • Others trying to take control of other British empires all over the world • Decided to negotiate • Signed Treaty of Paris to formally end the war • (100 points for Patriots)

  9. Recovery • War wrecked NC’s economy/debt • Many NC folks killed • Schools closed, no regular paper 5 yrs, businesses failed • Wiped out farms as they passed

  10. Debt • Colonist didn’t have money to pay taxes • 1789- more than $3 million in debt • $22,800,000 today • Still had rich land and optimistic citizens • Exports began again • (naval stores, lumber, tobacco)

  11. New Capital • Moved it to the center of the state___?______ • Bought 1,000 acres from plantation owner • Union Square, 8 streets names after Judicial districts (Edenton, New Bern, Wilmington, Hillsboro, Halifax, Salisbury, Fayetteville, and Morgan. • Named other streets after themselves and other political leaders • Sold land to investors/ built NC’s first state house

  12. Education • Built state university • Focus on science and philosophy • University of North Carolina • 1795 had first student Hinton James • NC first state to enroll students in state university
