Using Naturally ColouredFibre Challenges and Rewards
Traditional woolen textiles made use of the variety of tones and hues found in the native animals of their area.
Light reflection and absorption scale in visually equal steps, known as the ‘value’scale. Natural coloured animal fibres range between 20% and 80% reflection.
Creating successful tonal design requires skill and aptitude in using tonal keys
Each combination of values (tones) creates a different mood and aesthetic. Learning to observe and manipulate achromatic relationships is fundamental design skill.
The fine artist and the craftsperson working in natural colours had the flexibility to blend and mix to create rich tonal design. But the requirements of industrial processes mean that flexibility and variety are overtaken by speed, volume and economy.
Individual fleece colours merge with the homogenization of industrial blending processes so only in a small mill, or with sufficient volume of similar colouredfibre is the designer able to create a palette of colours to suit a specific market.
Is there a place for natural colouredfibres in commercial textiles?
