  1. A Change of Heart about Animals Considering the Structure of the Text

  2. Analyzing Organizational Structure • Where does the introduction end? Is it after the first paragraph, or are there more introductory paragraphs?

  3. On your notes, create the following chart, which you will use to complete the next few steps of this activity.

  4. Divide the body of the essay into sections on the basis of topics addressed. Use your chart to identify the paragraph numbers that belong with each topic.

  5. Identify where the conclusion begins, Is it the last paragraph, or does it begin before that?

  6. Descriptive Outlining • On your chart, write brief statements describing the rhetorical function and content of each paragraph or section. • Rhetorical Function: What does each section do for the reader? What is the writer trying to accomplish? • Content: What does each section say? What is the content?

  7. After making the descriptive outline, ask questions about the article’s organizational structure: • Which section is the most developed? • Which section is the least developed? Does it need more development? • Which section is the most persuasive? The least? • Write your answers below your chart on your notes.

  8. From your work charting the text, what do you think is the essay’s main argument? Is it explicit or is it implicit? Explain your answer in your notes.
